After sleeping until almost 1pm, Emily and I moved into our apartment today! We packed up our things at the FIAP and called a taxi around 2:15pm, and arrived exactly on time at 2:30pm in front of 98, Boulevard de l’Hopital, our new home.
We met Micha, the man who is in charge of checking renters in and out, and he ever so nicely helped lug all of our very heavy bags up 4 flights of stairs…the apartment building is kind of funky—smell-wise and appearance-wise—but the apartment itself is quite adorable, though a little moldy in the bathroom. He took us through the whole thing and pointed out all of the things that he already knows are wrong with the place (like the fact that our stove doesn’t work, which is a shame) and making note of them on our rental agreement so that we’re not held responsible when our lease is up. And then he informed us of the best part of this whole deal…we can use our landline to call the US for FREE! Both Emily and my jaws dropped when he said this…not only is the internet and our 100+ channels cable service included, but so is calling home!! Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to get the internet to work, but we’re hoping to have that figured out within the next couple of days.
So Emily and I spent the new few hours moving in and mainly talking to people at home, just because we can…then we went out to get some groceries, stopping at the Monoprix for cheese and Orangina, a little convenience store for wine, and this adorable boulangerie across the street for bread…baguettes are only $1! Then Lauren, Julie, and Supraja came over for a little housewarming, and after we’d eaten all the bread and almost all of the cheese (and we got Brie, Gruyere, and Camembert!) and drank the whole bottle of wine, we watched some French TV…a hilarious game show, and then Law & Order SVU, dubbed in French! It was a lovely time…the girls are so sweet, and it just felt so amazing to be eating real French bread and cheese…I’m starting to feel like I’ve definitely arrived.
Tomorrow Emily and I are going to do some more exploring in the area…we’ve already found a café called Le Manhattan, which is on the opposite corner from us, and there’s the boulangerie, a pharmacy, the Monoprix, a discotheque, and several bars and cafes, all within a few minutes walking distance! Boulevard de l’Hopital is a huge 2-lane road, and it seems like we will be within easy walking distance of pretty much anything we’re going to need…but tomorrow we’re going to find all the best places!
I still can't believe it...I’m in Paris, and it’s gorgeous! We have a great, ridiculously cheap apartment, the food is amazing, and the people are great…this is definitely going to be a fantastic semester. And it will be incredible if I can go see Julie next weekend…I miss her so much!! For now, I’m off to sleep…it’s almost 2am, and after a few quick phone calls we’re going to bed, so we don’t sleep through half the day again tomorrow!
