Today was our first day in Paris without much structure, which was a nice change…Emily and I got up early to go to breakfast anyway (Never pass up free food when you’re a poor student!) but when we came back to the room to figure out what we wanted to do for the morning until our meeting at 2pm, we both fell asleep on our beds until 1pm! When we woke up we took the subway over to the NYU Center, where we had a meeting to tell us how to use NYU Paris’ website…pretty standard stuff, but it was nice to find out that a section of the site where pictures of our group on excursions will be posted is viewable by friends and family…I’ll have to make sure I pass on that info to my parents!
After that meeting we had another quick one introducing us to the library (the librarian, Ann Marie was so bizarre and funny) and then Emily and I met up with Lauren and Julie and we went up to the Champs Elysees, to hunt for a Citibank for Lauren and a place to change traveler’s checks for Julie…we came out of the subway right at the Arc de Triomphe, and even though I’d already seen it, it was totally a breath-taking moment…to just step out of the metro, and BAM there it is!! So the 4 of us took some goofy tourist pictures, and then we continued to wander, bypassing Louis Vuitton and Chanel and going into a Toyota “Concept Car” showroom instead!
After our walk down the Champs Elysees, we got back on the subway and went to our respective homes (the FIAP for Emily and me, homestays for Lauren and Julie) and got ready to go out…Em and I hung out in our room for an hour or so with Supraja, another girl that we’ve gotten to be good friends with, and then I got a chance to talk to Julie!! I think I might get to go visit her next weekend, which would be absolutely amazing…she promised to split the cost of the trip with me, and I think I can do it so that my half is less than $50…I can’t wait to see her!
Emily and I met Supraja, Lauren, Julie, and another girl we’ve become friends with, Sam, down in the lobby of the FIAP, and the 6 of us went out in search of a cheap bar. After some wandering we found one that seemed reasonable, so we got a table…Lauren, Julie, Sam, and Emily split a bottle of red wine for 16E, and I got 25cl of rose, which is a little more than a class and a half, for only 4E…not bad at all! We talked for 2 hours about everything from classes we wanted to take, to movies, to Harry Potter…I think this particular group of girls is going to be a lot of fun! I wish we could have also had another girl with us, named Halley, that Em and I met the other day…I’ll have to see if I can find her on Monday.
After lots of wine and conversation, we all headed back to the FIAP, where Lauren and Julie decided to crash even though they have homestays to go back to…curse the Paris metro system for only running until 12:30am! And we’ve already planned a house-warming party at Emily and my apartment for tomorrow night…cheese, bread, fruit, and wine…I still can’t believe we’re doing this!
Tonight as we walked around we all kept saying that…it hasn’t really sunk in that we’re here, and I don’t think it will start to until tomorrow when we’re in our apartment, and I think it really won’t totally hit me until I’m in class in a few weeks. But for now, I’m content to pretend that I’m just on an extended vacation!
Tomorrow we move in!
