Day 59 - Melbourne
Well it's stopped raining but the weather hasn't improved much as it is now cold and cloudy rather than wet and humid, I'm not sure which is worse and no immediate sign of much improvement anytime soon.
We had thought that if today was nice we might head down to Phillip Island and watch the penguins come ashore but it is around 150km outside of Melbourne and consequently about a 5hr round trip so abandoned that idea and headed for the Victoria Market instead. I really wish we had something like this at home, it's a huge indoor market that sells almost anything you could wish for from huge varieties of fish and meat, fruit and vegetables, dairy, delicatessens as well as clothing, shoes, souvenirs etc. From there we took the circular tram to the Parliament Building and had a guided tour of the two chambers and library along with explanations how the Australian state and federal governments work. We followed that with a visit to the Old Treasury and the building that used to house all the gold during the gold rush. We did look to see if we could smuggle out the odd bar or so but no luck unfortunately. Mind you we are overweight with our luggage as it is; not sure how as we haven't bought anything so I don't know where the extra 3kg has come from. Finished the day's sightseeing with a trip on the city's circular bus tour which takes in some different places to the tram and is around 1 ½ hrs in length so it was good to take the weight off our feet after this morning's visits. Packing again tonight and heading off for the Great Ocean Rd tomorrow....
