Day 32 Wellington
Another sunny day in Wellington, two on the trot, given the weather in New Zealand so far I don't believe it will last. Took the cable car up to the botanical gardens this morning, one way this time so we can walk back down through the gardens. Before we set off we went into the cable car museum and discovered that this is not the only cable car in Wellington; such is the small amount of available land in the city there are many houses built on the surrounding hillsides that have either no road access or so many steps leading up to their houses that they have built either their own cable cars or community shared ones. There are over 400 privately owned cable cars in Wellington; kinda beggers belief doesn't it. Anyway gradually walked our way downhill thorugh the botanical gardens - it's a 40 minute walk which gives you some perspective of the size of the gardens and how far up the hillside it is. Beautiful gardens though, a real mixture of different types of trees, foliage and flowers. Had to get a quick nail repair after but they recommended a great restaurant for lunch and also a trip to make when we go up to the Coromandel Penisular so worth the stop just for that. After lunch we continued walking around the city and visited the Wellington Museum, it was quite nice to get out of the sun for a little while, now I bet you never expected me to say that did you? The walk back to our hotel involves walking along the quay - such a hardship: there were a whole load of secondary school kids, Friday afternoon and all that, in their swim gear climbing up on any available strucure and jumping off into sheltered sections of the harbour. Nice deep calm water and nobody telling them they musn't or worrying about heath and safety; just kids having fun which was nice to see. Further on round the quay they have built a large skateboard park with spectator seating which was also full of people watching these guys doing tricks in what can only be described as a cross between a huge empty swimming pool with rounded bottom and a snowboard half pipe. Something we could do with at home on the beach front to keep the kids off the street, not just those participatng but those watching too. Must have walked miles today as feet really hurt, going to go soak in a nice hot bath......
