Day 31 Picton to Wellington
Well here we are on the North Island. The trip over on the Islander ferry this morning was perfect, calm and sunny, what more could one ask for. They said we might see whales or dolphins, well no whales sadly but we saw a huge number of dolphins in the calm waters of Queen Charlotte Sound. There must have been 30 or so of them fishing. Our only complaint was that the ferry was going so fast we were past them before we could get any decent photos. We have got good videos before but never of so many all at once. We kept a vigil out across the Cook Strait for the resident Sperm Whales but they stubbornly refused to make an appearance, typical.... Quick shuttle bus from the port to the station and taxi to the hotel - Tailor Made travel have done it again with the hotel, The Museum is suberb, right on the key by the Te Papa, New Zealand's main museum. The hotel lobby and public areas are full of fabulous works of art. We have a one bedroomed suite which has a complete kitchen with washer/dryer, dishwasher etc. They certainly cater for travellers over here.
We have walked ourselves almost to exhaustion this afternoon just exploring around the city. We went up the cable car late this afternoon to the botanical gardens but realised that it all goes downhill from the top back into the city and we had bought a return ticket so had to climb back up again to get it back down - won't do that again!! Here for three nights so definitiely going to indulge in the cafe culture of the city down on the quay, weather permitting and explore loads.
