Day 46 Russell to Auckland
Early start this morning as we need to get the hire car delivered in Auckland by lunchtime and it is around a 4hr drive from Russell, well it should be less but you have to allow for roadworks of which there are loads and for the fact that there is only motorway about 20km out of Auckland. Nice day again today, much better than the drive up when it rained most of the way. Fairly uneventful drive which is just how we like them and we made quite good time which allowed us to check in and drop the cases off at the hotel before taking the car back.
Once we had settled into our room we went out for a stroll around the city. We are very near the Sky Tower (the highest building in the Southern Hemisphere) so as it was nice and sunny with good visibility we thought that today was a good day to visit. Just as we approached we saw someone doing a freefall from the top; ok it was a controlled freefall in as much as she, yes I did say she, was on a harness but nevertheless you've got to be absolutely nuts to do that or the alternative thrill seeking activity which is to walk around the top on a platform outside. In actual fact for someone like me who really doesn't like heights the lift itself was enough of a challenge as some masochist designer had put a glass floor in the middle; to say I clung to the far side was an understatement! The views from both the Observation Tower and the Sky Deck some 10 floors higher were spectacular though. You'd think that as I had conquered the World Trade Centre which was 110 floors and this is only 60 it should have been a breeze, but I don't think I will ever get used to being that far off the ground. Our hotel room which overlooks the harbour is only 6 floors up and that seems quite high enough. Waiting to see what the weather brings tomorrow before we decide what to do…….
