Day 12/13 Oahu to Fiji
Up even earlier today 4:30 to get the 5:15 pickup to the airport. My body is begining to forget what sleep is but strangely I don't seem to feel too bad on it. It must be the opposite of S.A.D. i.e. the brightness of the sun makes you want to hibernate less or something. At the time of writing it is 9:20pm and the clocks have gone back one hour but forward a day, very confusing. We left Hawaii on Friday and got to Fiji on Saturday losing a whole day in the process; crossing the international date line obviously. Anyway flight was good, Air Pacific is a good airline, certainly better than American, but then all but the real budget airlines are in my experience. The flight wasn't massively full but I had to have a very large Tongan man sitting next to me the whole way who didn't seem to want to avail himself of any empty seat elsewhere!
It seems that the Fijians are very particular about anything being brought onto the island, and I do mean anything. It is the first time I have my bags scanned entering the country! Not just fruit and flowers like the Americans but any type of food and they even want to know if you have been near farm animals or have any soil on your shoes. I'm not quite sure what they would do if you have any of this soil and fortunately didn't find out.
We were met at the airport by the ground agents from AT Pacific and the assistant manager from Matamanoa island where we were originally staying who explained again about the decision to upgrade us to Royal Davui and hoped we didn't have a problem with this, (as if) and we were to contact her if there were any problems at all. We were originally told we would be picked up a 6:30am, for our transfer by car and boat; groan, another early start, but as luck would have it we had a message at the Hilton Fiji Beach Resort that we would be taken by seaplane at 9:30am so would be collected at 8:45am, hooray a lie in and leisurely breakfast!!!!
The Hilton is a lovely hotel and we have a beachfront room. There are 7 pools in all and they are all like getting into a hot bath; so is the ocean. The temperature is around 30deg but it feels hotter as it's very humid; even at night the temp doesn't drop below around 25deg. I never thought I would be glad of a little air conditioning!
Nice dinner at the beachside restaurant with a lovely gentle breeze blowing off the sea. Time for bed now and off to 5star luxury tomorrow………
