The 5 days spent in Dubrovnik have been the best of my life!
I'm taking too long to write these so a lot of info is getting left out. I do other things between drinking… I promise.
I wasn't supposed to come to Dubrovnik, I couldn't get a room. But some of the peeps from Zagreb were there so I decided to stop in for 2 days. I was there for 5, haha. I travelled down with Alan on one of the longest bus/train journey I've ever had; 13 hours. I'm a long way behind schedule already. The train trip was long, it took about 13 hours. But it was nice to look out the window once again. Very contrasting scenery though, it went from forests, mountains and deer, to signs warning of landmines and the ruins of old tanks and buildings.
There was no room in the hostel everyone was staying in, so I was sleeping on the couch in true backpacker- style. It was a great hostel, right in the center of the old town. I spend most of my time upstairs sleeping on everyone else's beds.
We ate out for every single meal while in Dubrovnik, breakfast everyday at Dubravka; a restaurant with the best view. http://www.dubravka1836.hr/ The weather was amazing so we relaxed on the beach for most of day two and ended up booking boat tour around the islands for day three. The trip included wine, grappa and grilled fish for lunch. The organizer was a little nervous about us coming along because we were drunk when we booked and would only pay if we could bring our own beer along.
We ended up drinking that night at an Irish bar called The Gaffe so I was pretty hung over the morning of the trip. At this point in time I really couldn't have cared if we made it there or not; we were pretty late after stopping at Dubravka for breakfast again. But I'm really glad we made it. Once arriving at the boat we noticed a lot of families on board and we were asked to be on our best behavior. That was never going to happen, we were finished the beer by about 11am. We were pretty rowdy, but most people weren't too upset and even joined in. Old French ladies included. The islands we visited were amazing; we just swam and drank all day. On the way to the third island it became apparent that the grappa hadn't been brought out yet, so it was requested. It turned out to be home made and in a 2lt plastic bottle. The 6 of us drank just about the whole thing, along with the wine. Later that night we were back at the Gaffe drinking with some friends made on the boat trip. Before I ended up going to some clubs and not getting home until about 6 - 7am. It was a long day.
Day three was all about sitting at the East West Club on the beach just outside the city walls and eating at Taj Mahal, a Bosnian restaurant and not a lot else, it was a pretty lazy day.
Day four consisted of sitting in the pub again and watching the Gran Prix and the England v Germany game. I cheered for Germany just to be a pain. It ended up being a 15 hour drinking session.
Leaving the girls behind in Dubrovnik was pretty sad; we'd had heaps of fun. But I still had Alan for some company so it wasn't too bad. We headed back up towards Spilt a city I'd heard mixed reviews about but I was still looking forward to it. It was okay, not nearly as nice as Dubrovnik but it still gave me plenty to do for a couple of days, mainly swim at the main beach which was only a 2 minute walk from the hostel. I finally got to visit the Plitvice National Park, although it turned out o be a nightmare when the busses didn't arrive. If I didn't run 30 minutes to another stop I would have spent the night on a bus stop in the middle of a forest. I made that bus by a couple of minutes. But the park was spectacular and worth all the hassle.
Next stop Mostar.
