Have just uploaded photos, sorry some of them are round the wrong way, can't figure out how to turn them. Just managed to get into town to use the internet Cafe today, probably won't be able to get here again untill next Saturday.
On Sunday we all went horse riding. We went for a ride through an African forest. When we got back from that a few of us went to the pool at the chimp sanctuary. We decided it was too cold to stay.
This week started with some new chimps being introduced after their period in quarantine. 2 were introduced in the jeuvenile enclosure (Tony and Sampa) and 1 was introduce to the adult enclosure (Josephine.) This meant that the whole of the chimp sanctuary was in lock down with only the keepers and managing director were allowed near the enclosures. We went on a bushwalk in the morning and when we got back in the afternoon went to observe the chimps in the adult enclosure (including josephine.) The introduction had gone very well however after we had finished our observations Josephine had managed to escape. Fortunately she only escaped to the empty enclosure next door. We were put into lockdown again and had to stay out of the way until they had all the chimps inside again. In the evening we watched a DVd of 'Escape to chimp Eden' which is a show about the chimps at the sanctuary i'm volunteering in.
On tuesday they tried the introductions again. In the morning we did some more observations of the adult chimps before going for lunch. After we had eaten we sat in the sunshine in front of the jeuvenile enclosure. We were then told that the sanctuary had to go into lock down again because Josephine had escaped. A few minutes later another volunteer and member of staff came to where we were in lock down. They told us that Josephine had completely escaped from the enclosure this time and had then got into the office. (see video of the destruction!) We then spent 2 hours locked in the restaurant while they got josephine back into the night rooms. In the evening we watched more of escape to chimp eden.
Due to the escape on wednesday none of the chimps were allowed out. As Josephine had escaped from under the fence we had to check all the fencing, reinforcing weak areas with extra wire and rocks. In the afternoon, we made an observation of the chimps in the infant enclosure. We then had to go and remove the rubbish from inside the adult enclosure.
This morning we went on another bushwalk with Jacques. There was a lot more climbing in this one (see photos). We first had to climb a big rock which was very smooth, with almost nothing to grab onto at the top. The second time we had to climb in between two areas of rock. On the way back to chimp eden we saw giraffe, kudu, and Impala.
Tomorow we are going on our Safari through Krugar national park and will be staying there all weekend.
