Hi Forgot the cable to my camera so you'll have to wait till next week to see some shots but here is a brief run down of what i've been doing for the last week.
Arrived in Africa on Monday and taken straight to my home for the next few weeks. Three girls had arrived with me and the rest of our group arrived later in the evening. Our group has 12 vounteers. We arrived too late to help with the chimps on that day so we had to stay in our accomadation (Wendy world). We were told about the chimps by a woman who has just started to work for the project and had dinner.
On Tuesday we met the chimps for the first time. We also met Jess who has been giving our lectures. We met the chimps in the adult enclosure first, they are called Nicky Amadeus, Jinga, Mimi, Guida and Lika. Jess then gave us our first lecture. we then walked round the perimeter to the jeuvenile enclosure, the younger chimps are much harder to tell apart. There are three adult chimps in there called Cozy, Joao and Zak. Cozy was brain damaged as a result of cruel treatment before he arrived at the sanctuary and is prone to strange behaviour such as throwing large rocks at people. After the chimps wre put away for the night we decided to walk back to wendy world. On the way home we saw a herd of Impala. Later that evening I went to the pub with Paddy, Fiona, Lori, and Marco (other volunteers).
On Wednesday we woke up to find 5 Giraffe walking past Wendy World. We started our day trying to identify the chimps before having another couple of lectures with Jess.
On Thursday we went for our first bush walk. This turned out to be more of a bush climb. We walked, climbed and slid for 22 hours. On the way we saw a pair of baboons on the trees in the distance. On the way back in the game viewer we also saw more Giraffe and Zebra. In the afternoon we had another lecture with Jess. After our work was done we went to the pub for a couple of drinks before heading back to Wendy World for dinner.
Yesterday we had our final lecture and learnt how to do observastions of the chimps. Me and clare (another volunteer) then made our first observation of Nicky. In the evening we went for a camp out in the bush. When we arrived we found the campsite full of Giraffe. We collected firewood (including some from a poisonous tree!) We had a few drinks then used the hot coals from the fire to make a barbeque pit. The food was delicious and the camp was great fun apart from having to pee in the bush.
