We went on a boat cruise in the afternoon, it took us to 3 different islands close by Venice, we went to Murano where the Murano glass factory is and got to watch them make a vase and a statue of a rearing stallion. It’s amazing how much detail they are able to put into the work when working on it, the glass looks like liquid, it gets (and stays) so hot, that 5 minutes after they’ve molded it, they can light a cigarette off the actual glass itself (which the glassmaker so kindly demonstrated).
The second island we went to was called Burano, it’s a cute little island which used to house 30 000 people, there is now 15 000 living there, the houses are all painted with bright colors and there cloths lines dangle from window to window, and like Venice canals are out the front of houses which they use as roads.
The third island we went to was Torcello this is where the first ever church of Venice stands as well as some houses and café’s.
We then came back to the main city and walked around the little alleyways for the rest of the afternoon (oh, and tried some other flavors of gelato).
