Buenos dias!
Today was the first day of actual academic work. We had to take a written test and speak for an oral portion of the exam. Kristina and I woke up early and had a huge breakfast with Daysi. She made us ham and eggs, papaya (which was as big as my torso), toast with guava jelly, and gallo pinto. Our site director, Maria Dolores came and picked Kristina and I up to go to school at 8:30am. She was all smiles as always and happy to hear that everything was going well. She was also very proud of Kristina and I that we were able to figure out how to walk to school by ourselves. It really isn't that hard, but since we can't communicate I think everyone expects that we need constant help. Usually its true!
The test went well, and we started looking at classes. None of them were the same as what we had been expecting, so it was pretty confusing. It looks like we will have class from 7 am until around 12 or 1pm which is awesome since we will have lots of time to get involved in the afternoon. We met our language partners, at the same meeting. My intercambio is a freshman from Managua. She is so tiny I have to lean down to hear her, and she peaks very quietly. She is also very nice and welcoming and is excited to help me figure everything out. The 10 of us all went out to lunch which was pretty fun and loud. We walked and Kristina and I payed the price for trying to fit in. Both of us were wearing sneaker-ish shoes because we were told flip flops were a sign that you were a foreigner (not that my blonde hair didn't give that one away). Anyway neither of us can put most of our shoes on now because of the blisters.
Kristina and I walked home after going to the market and had some pastries. Then we watched sunset from the terrace again. The picture above is from the terrace. Also we finally had a long conversation with our host mother Dona Carmen who is feeling much better. She is sooooo nice and happy to have us here, which is wonderful to hear.
Tomorrow starts our spanish classes and we are going all day! I can't wait to have a little bit of a better grasp on the language.
hasta manana
