The Peak District is beautiful beautiful BEAUTIFUL!! Driving through to find our campsite, everywhere we turned the scenery was just stunning - well worth the 3hour journey! I was a bit nervous for the many sheep on pretty steep hillsides that looked like they might fall to their death at any minute but somehow they seemed happy, and luckily I didn't see any fall! I don't think anything beats the views of the country side, miles of hills, farmland, forests and rock faces - just gorgeous and healthy!
Our campsite was next to the Robin Hood Inn which had some lovely old fashioned cars parked outside of it. I wish the Inn was themed like robin hood inside with costumes and everything - that would've been amazing! But it was just a normal pub, nice enough! The campsite we went to didn't allow us to take the car up to it so it was a quite a trek up the hill with all the gear (luckily steve carried most of it). Cows and sheep all over the fields that later i'm sure were right outside our tent, didn't help me sleep too well in the cold that night, I'd forgotten what camping is like! I probably only got a few hours sleep in the end but we got up, ate and set off for my first real rock climb!
On our way to the 'Horseshoe quarry' steve stopped off and took me along to this cool little trail that led to a pretty hard bouldering route. We had to climb up to get to the ledge where it was, I could see the chalk marks of where other climbers had been. I didn't try it due to the 20ft drop off the edge of the ledge if i'd of stumbled or not been able to hold on (which I wouldn't have) but I did have a climb through and around some cave-like openings in the rock face and it was cool, I do have a little bit of a problem getting back down again though, climbing through tiny gaps and up trees and cliffs is fine but I get scared getting back down again! Steve held my hand though and I made it!
The Horseshoe was great! We went on the smallest and easiest of the climbs to get me used to it - it's so different from climbing walls! But it wasn't quite as hard as I thought it'd be and I did complete a few! Later on we went for a walk near the campsite which lead to a really cool place for Trad climbing, we didn't have any gear with us but just walked and climbed around a bit on the rocks - had fun with jumping around and taking photos before heading to the Inn to get warm! We stayed there a few hours because we froze the night before and wanted to keep warm as long as possible this time! I sat hugging a cup of hot chocolate until we braved the great outdoors again! Being a bit more prepared this time I slept in about 4 layers inside my sleeping bag! Had a better nights sleep that night which was a relief! Next morning we headed off for another few hours climbing at the horseshoe before departing for home. We went the wrong way at some point and ended up back where we started which was like - oops! It took much longer to get back without the satnav which had died on the way there, but we made it home eventually!
The Peak district is a Beautiful Beautiful place :)
