'Namaste'
Nepalis people are super friendly helpful people, so of course we though it only polite to learn a couple of Nepali words, 'namaste' used for hello/goodbye and 'dhanyabad' meaning thankyou. So far we have mastered 'namaste' and it's rolling of the tongue fairly easy, although at times Ryan likes to add 'hola' and 'gracias' for good measure. We went to the gym Ryan found, it was a small grubby mans gym with only weights, and you had to go barefoot in there for some reason which felt weird, what if I dropped a weight on my foot, or even worse picked up a fungus. I thought I would feel uncomfortable in there as the only female but I needn't of worried as Ryan was the one getting the stares, Nepali men are extremely impressed by Ryan's muscles so he had a more than a few followers watching him and asking for weight training tips. Then out of the blue I felt the building shaking, I didn't know what was happening everyone was signaling to get out so I called to Ryan who was completely oblivious to the whole thing, it turns out that it was a 6.9 earthquake in Nepal and India and sadly people were killed just a few blocks from us and many more elsewhere.
We visited a buddhist place called Bodhnath where people go to worship. We met Dawa our helpful sherpa guide who showed us around the Bodhnath Stupa which is a huge circular buddhist temple drapped in colourful prayer flags where he taught us about buddhist rituals and beliefs, I was even more impressed that it was surrounded by lots of little crafty shops. We bought some gorgeous prayer beads, made up of 108 sandalwood beads (108 is the buddhist spiritual number) which smell amazing I'm already addicted to sniffing them. As you complete the clockwise circuit of the stupa you see people praying, buddhist monks walking and people spining prayer wheels, it's such a spiritual place, you feel calmed by the sound of drums, ringing bells and then someone will always hock a loogie next to you to wake you up again. After getting dizzy circling the stupa a few times we sat at a roof top restaurant with Dawa to disscuss our trekking plans over Neplai chiya tea (a milky spiced tea) and momos (spiced meat filled dumplings), what a day.
