Krys & Toni's World Adventure
Hi guys,
Thanks to all you sypathetic folks who suggested Krys could be finding more effective ways of bumping off Toni (you know who you are!). Monkey bite is healing nicely, and so far no more injuries to Toni, although it was finally Krys' turn and he sliced a bit out if his knee during a run up to a rope swing. He's going to call it his injury from his time in Nam from now on, even though he was in Laos (because the war spilled over to here anyway).
We arrived in Vang Vieng about a week ago and loved it. Just a little town in the middle of the mountains. The main activity there is tubing which was brill. You basically sit in a rubber ring and float down a river next to the mountains. Every few hundred metres there are wooden shack bars with huge rope swings and zip lines to fly down into the water. There were loads of local kids in the water zooming down the rapids with us and it was a really fun place. We also cycled to a lagoon (where Krys got his knee injury). That wasnt so fun as was quite far and about 6 million degrees on a broken road.
We left Vang Veing for Phonsovan and had the worst journey yet on a local bus. Very hot, no air conditioning and no seats left so had to sit on bit of wood for 9 hours or so. Only a few tourists there though so we met a group of people doing the same thing and have travelled with them since. At Phonsovan the only real attraction is the Plains of Jars. Basicaly hundereds of huge jars (a few metres high) scattered accross the country side. They think they're about 4000 years old and dont know for certain who put them there or why, although there are lots of local theories, such as burial sites, offering to the gods and as wine containers (although I think that would be a hell of a lot of wine!). Lots had been bombed by the Americans during the Vietnam war. The US weren't supposed to be at war with Laos, but bombed it massively all the same. The area we were in has loads of unexploded bombs. Apparently the US spent 2.2 millions dollars a day bombing them, and area we were in, more bombs were dropped than were dropped by both sides combined during the whole of the second world war. Its so sad as they were bombed for no reason by the US and it's so beautiful.
We went on a bit of a boys trip to see a field where there were lots of unexploded bombs. The boys on the trip loved it but Toni and Louisa (the other girl on the trip) werent sure why they were trampling through lots of bombs which could go off if trodden on- didnt seem very safe. The best part of the trip was getting invited into a local village house. We all sat around on the floor in his living room while he gave us the locally produced spirit, Lao Lao. Toni hated it but had to take a shot as it would be seem as rude not too. She took one then refused the rest as she thought it would probably be more rude to throw up on his floor. The ex chief of the village then arrived to see the westerners though, and she had to have another shot to show willing, then the current chief also arrived and more was passed round. Most people were pretty merry by then- very potent stuff! Think Krys quite liked it by the 10th shot. There were also some gorgeous kids playing in a lake where we stopped for lunch which allowed us to get some nice arty photos!
We have now arrived in Luang Prabang for the new year festival which should be fun.
Happy easter everyone! Hope those of you at Frankland had a good (but not too good without me) easter day out. Its very strange cos theres no easter here!
