If this is the only day I get on the camino, it was exactly as I would have wished.
There is way too much for me to type on an iPhone to explain how incredible today was. So many funny stories to write about when I get a keyboard ;)
A few things:
Stepping on the Camino for the first time gave me goosebumps. Then, you wind through such quaint small towns - Following the arrows is a combination of one part scavenger hunt and one part amazing race. You have to pay attention, if you miss one (and there's no "x") you have to backtrack to last one to find the one you missed. The first part was very well marked. Then, not so much later.
Realized I took most pix today on camera - missed the most amazing town on phone, so can't post any. More tomorrow. I want from Porto to Arvore to Vila de Conde to Arcos to Rates today. (Map won't show this route as towns were small).
Met my new friend Besi (Beezie) from Bavaria, Germany when we were both consulting our guides at the same place where all markers stopped. Spent rest of day walking together, enjoyed a dinner of octopus, and got the last 2 bunks in Auberge (top ones of course). Didn't get much sleep - lots of snorers in the room of 10 beds (one of 3 rooms with 10 beds each) - ear plugs didn't make a dent ;(. And some pilgrims got up at 4:45 and on road at 5 - eek!
(See pix).
Some stats:
Walked 13.08 miles (~5 hours straight) - man, a few more steps and I'd have a half marathon!(didn't notice until I was in bed, or I would have walked it!)
Start: ??? (Long story) - near Arvore as best I can guess
Finish: Sao Pedro de Rates
Blisters: 0

Phil P One foot in front of the other....After a long walk up, hopefully the road heads down.
Terry Hiked 13 miles on day 1 - Very Impressive! Best octopus I ever had was in Portugal. They know their seafood.
lauren Love reading updates, thanks, and enjoy! good luck!
Warren Remember, when in a foreign country and they don't understand you, speak slower and louder. Remember, a forceful voice demands their attention. Well, maybe not good advice.
Mom and Dad Way to go, Kris! Love to you!
Mom and Dad What has your weather been? Looks good from the pictures.
