There are a lot of dachshunds here. I mean A LOT! I love it. It makes me missing the girls a little less.
The first night in Vernazza we ate at a restaurant right on the pier of the harbor. I ordered the seafood spaghetti, to which it had a whole "cuttlefish" on the top. I wasn't sure how to eat it, and luckily the locals were so nice that they split it open and showed me how to get to the meat. There were 4 men that eagerly came over to help us 3 ladies with this small, but difficult task. ;)
The first morning we awoke in Vernazza we ate at the Blue Marlin, which had excellent breakfasts. After breakfast we took the ferry over to Montosorro, which is the neighboring town of Vernazza. It was amazing to see the towns from the water front. We spent the day on the beach... Relaxing and swimming in the turquoise blue waters. After a few hours of relaxing, we rinsed off in the outdoor showers and tacked the hike back to Vernazza.
We were warned that the hike was the toughest one out of all of the hikes between the cities, but it also came with the best views, so we decided to tackle it. Halfway up the mountain was a man camped out in a mini cave, serving up limoncello made right there, fresh in the mountains. He's got a good spot... We saw 3 people who had just taken advantage of it!
Near the end of the hike they have some homeless cats that live in the side of a mountain. The locals bring food up there and encourage people to feed them in the morning. There are also small little houses for the cats that provide them with a place to sleep. It looked as though they were loved, even though their home was a mountain.
The views coming into Vernazza were spectacular. We immediately jumped in the ocean upon our return and filled out bellies with pasta.
The next morning I decided to take on the next two sections of the hike on my own.. I went through corniglia first, which is a small town that is built on top of a cliff. I stopped to get someone mango gelato and cool down in the shade. I decided to take on the next section too, as Rick Steeves said it was only 45 minutes. Well, I got lost and it took me extra time to get back on the trail... And then it was another 2 hours before I reached Manarola. The views were spectacular. It was hot and tough terrain but so worth it. I ran into a nice couple that took my picture and told me to "be safe" because I was hiking alone. But I didn't feel alone at all. I felt so happy.
I took the bus bad to Vernazza and we rented some kayaks for the afternoon. Halfway through the kayak, we decided to switch and let Lacey be in the tandum kayak with Jen and I would take the solo one. Well... We needed to go to shore for this and it was no easy feat! We got slammed and washed up on a nude beach (by accident) where a bunch of nude people were watching us try and navigate and survive these giant waves. Nonetheless... We made it and got back out on the water with only minor injuries to Jens toe. We kayaked to the town of Corniglia and got some amazing pics. We even saw a jellyfish!!!
That night, Lacey and I split a lobster spaghetti which was so so yummy!
