Today we woke up early in order to get to Chinque Terre. I recently had looked at a map and noticed that Pisa was not far out of the way, and this would be a good spot to see the leaning tower! We ventured out to get on our first train of the trip. We eventually figured it out, but Florence has a pretty large station so we made our train with only moments to spare (after we asked twice where it was... Who knew Italian would be so hard to read!?). We were able to go through the beautiful region of Tuscany on our trip when we landed in Pisa. We had lunch at a cute little cafe with a sample platter of meats, cheeses, fresh fruit, bread and balsamic to dip in.
We took a taxi for 10 euro to the leaning tower of Pisa. It was pretty cool to see that thing after reading and learning about it my whole life!! It actually was quite beautiful... Made of white marble. When they were building the tower, they weren't even half done when they started to notice that it was already starting to sink! It continues to sink every year... Precautions have been taken to make sure it never topples over though.
If you go to see the tower, don't step on the grass. Despite the many signs, people were all over that grass until an angry guard would come running over every 5 minutes blowing his whistle!
We took 1 more train to Vernazza with a slight stop in La Spetzia. Note to self... There are TWO La Spetzia stations. Again... We almost missed our train by about 2 minutes because we got off on the wrong one. I did get some weird looks when I bought a coke from a small casino where tourists typically aren't at... I probably stuck out like a sore thumb with my American, sweaty clothes.
Nonetheless, we made it to Vernazza and immediately jumped in the ocean. What a breath of fresh air after traveling in such busy places all day.
