We've arrived at Humboldt State Park after a billion hours of driving! Our campsite is nice and these giant trees are gorgeous!
The drive here was nice, and we make a stop in Willits, CA along the way. There we entered this cute little consignment shop, and Mickey started chatting with the shop owner, Linda, about our sons crazy love for Giraffes (which was in no way encouraged by his giraffe crazy mom). She then pulled this gorgeous hand carved wooden giraffe from behind the counter and tells us this story about how she recieved it...
She was on a long trip from Maine to California and had somehow gotten herself lost alond the way, so she saw a little shop and as she walked toward it, she noticed a box of items and the giraffe sticking out of the top.... She assumed they were bargain items and asked the shop owner about them. The owner said that she was getting ready to take the box to the dumpster. Linda then asked if she could have it and the owner of the shop told her she was more than welcome to it. The giraffe had a broken ear and she couldn't sell it.
Linda told us Giraffes are a symbol of luck and that we should take this giraffe for our son. She said that a child who has such a great love for giraffes at only a year and a half should definetly have it. Her only request was that when he no longer has a need for the thing, that we give it to another, just as she did, and just as it was given to her.
I think this is a beautiful picture of how God wants us to be toward people. You see such kindness in the world today, but doesn't God call us to love people? I really admire Linda and her giving spirit, and it was such a joy to meet her. I pray that I can be a joy to others as well!
Anyway, the redwoods are beautiful! We are at a state park, so it is well preserved and protected. There is a visitors center that you can go to if you want to learn about these giant trees! They are so beautiful and ancient! I think some of them are the trees God first planted when he made this earth!
