Buenos Dias,
Jesus Maria, Alte Gracia

*************************************************************************************
South America,
yes it is. The first time I set my feet to soil on this continent, and it all goes fine. After I've slept at the airport in Sydney, my flight to Buenos Aires departs. This ensures that I am having my longest Monday. I leave on Monday morning at 11: 00 am for a flight of almost 13 hours. But because I pass the so called date line, I remain in the same day and arrive on Mondaymorning 10: 00 local time. I have a whole day to go.
In New Zealand I already settled my place to sleep in Buenos Aires, I can stay a few nights at the charming and most friendly Jimena (Andres and her brother and her mother). For myself a super relaxed start, a welcome with open arms in South America. I can talk in English with Jimena, and her mother and brother are patient with me with my Spanish. I am staying five nights with this wonderful and hospitable family. A beautiful cottage outside the old city boundary, an Argentine barbecue with indeed excellent meat, and even experience a birthday, Andres has turned 30 years young. Also, I have found to be particularly and dear to be there, because not even a year ago, unfortunately, the father of Jimena has passed away from a heart attack.
Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires itself is a fine city, and it's hot summer weather. Every day I leave the house together with Jimena, to explore parts of the city by myself. The city is basically simple: an awful lot of blocks, so getting lost is not really possible. I can wander through different areas, some of course look better than others. The colonial buildings from the 17th and 18th century and the 20th century buildings alternate. The neighborhood Palermo was wonderful to stroll around , beautiful and nice houses with rich ornamental facades, no busy streets and many trees in the streets. Fine! Pretty new museum about the life of Evita Peron is interesting, the woman who is admired by many, but by the established order from her time dismissed.
In the weekend I changed address of sleep, did couchsurfing at Maria Laura her place. Also for her I am the very first CS guest, and she is also a delightful sweet young lady. Like to talk! Also received much information from her. She works for the South American Explorers club, an organisation where I will make additional use of later in my journey.
A nice surprise was to witness a small drumband carnival in her street on the Saturday evening. Without Laura knowing this was going to happen in her street. Drum bands with dancers, dancers and young dancers, young and old, rich in beautiful colorful and symbolic clothes. While dancing at the rhythm of the drum they entertained the audience together with the performing singers. OLA! And the little ones, who had great time with confetti spray cans, PSSSSSSJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJT! FUN INDEED! Meant that the idea to visit a tango show at one of the squares in the Centre was not going to be done.
A special place in Buenos Aires is the old cemetery Cementerio de la Recoletta, a.o. with the grave of Evita Peron. Here are no small tombs. Nay. The cemeteries only exists but impressive ornate buildings out of about 2.5 meters high. It's like I'm walking through a small compact small cityarea! Later I hear the story that some tourists go to this cemetery, because the Guidebook says that Cementerio the grave of Evita Peron is located here. Then some of them ask "who is she, this Evita Peron...."
Cordoba
Cordoba, I stay here the next spot for eventually almost a week, a beautiful combination of seeing things and relax. I'm arrived here in the comfortable night bus service, the journey is approximately 9 hours. I can sleep in my comfortable wide one person seat well enough. At 7 o'clock in the morning, I arrive in Cordoba, just before we enter the bus station suddenly I awake. I stay at CS´er Rolando, so I am figuring out how to get there, check for the correct bus. Found his place, acquainted with the friendly Rolando, freshened up , drink coffee and off I go into the city.
It has been a time since I walked through a really beautiful city. That of course has to do with the history of other cities that I have visited in recent months. Cordoba is a beautiful, for Latin America understanding ancient city, and has many buildings from the colonial period. Beautiful stately homes and buildings, many with ornaments on the outside, beautiful churches. In the heat I stroll a whole day through the old town, can enjoy beautiful architecture.
Missing
But it wasn't just enjoy. Also a good and intense moment of reflection was there, namely a museum about the period of the late 1970s. The time that several young people suddenly disappeared, in Cordoba done by the so called D2 Police Unit. The museum is also located in this old police station. It is violently and gripping to read the ´in memoriam´ books, created mainly by the mothers, with contributions from family members and friends. I can reasonably understand the Spanish language. I read a piece of life course, that suddenly paused. Poems and short stories in which people are wondering "How would you look", i can understand the pain and sorrow from the stories and photosd. With a lump in my throat I have take time to see and read a few albums by taken. I knew it already, but it's good to realize, how important it is to have a good family around you.
Jesus Maria, Alte Gracia
I also make some trips, first to the small town of Jesus Maria to see a beautiful Jezuitenmonastry. First I am deliverd at a museum 5 km outside the city, in a place with a few houses and an old building. the taxi driver had me not quite well understood and interpreted the photo on the information leaflet wrong. Museum door is closed, wait there, assuming the door will open at 15: 00. Fortunately there is the friendly neighbour of the museum, I can wait at her on the changes. And of course I can practice a bit of Spanish. The Argentine Museumguide was apparently proud to have a Dutch Visitor, because he had a lot to tell. Luckilly I understand the half, like that the road where the museum is located is to old important route to Lima. Through this is the same road as where the taxi has driven over, I walk back to the town, knowing that I will pass the beautiful colonial Jezuitenmonastry. This one is indeed very nice, enjoy my hour in the monastery.
I had the opportunity to spend this day with the local CS'er Vicotria, but the international SMS traffic here in Argentina doesn´t work in the way I wanted to work. So it was time to get a cheap mobile and a prepaid number. Done the next day, but that does not mean that I can directly call. Mobile numbers in Argentina are associated with region, so I need to do a trick, to take away certain numbers and appending a number. Of course this is depending on the region. And I still don´t know when I need to use the 0 and when not.
Other excursion is also particularly, the small town of Alte Gracia. Not so old, but became known as Ernesto ´Che´ Guevara has spent his youth here. In the Lonely Planet is indicated that the card is 5 pesos. To my surprise it turns out that the price is 75 pesos. I do understand the the numbers in Spanish, but when they said me ´setante sinco´ I first didn´t understood it. Later in the afternoon, I understand that this private museum only three weeks ago has increased the price increased dramatically: 15 pesos for Argentineans, 75 for foreigners. Of course, I wonder what the revolutionary Ernesto would have tought of this revolutionary price increase! ;-) The musuem is o. k, many old, beautiful photo, but in terms of info is the 75 pesos not quite worth it.
Don't worry, Alte Gracia has a nice small Centre, dominated by a monastery, a church, a square and a landscaped pond. The monastery is used as a dwelling house, and even a time until a late stage are the houses built around the monastery, wich caused the foundation of the town.
I still have a full day to spend, because I will take the night bus to Mendoza. I've decided to visit the monastery of Santa Catalina. This meant that I could again go into direction Jesus Maria, and today I indeed spent the afternoon spent with CS´er Victoria. Driving in the car looking for Santa Catalina, a dirt road right through the vast plain, with here and there a big bump. We find Santa Catalina, and moments later, I understand why this monastery is not mentioned in my guide book: The monastery is private property, not open to the public. I can only in the Church. Then we spent time in a winery, by then can I return to Cordoba to retrieve my stuff at the hostel. Do some reading, being on time to the station, and in the night after the movie I sleep a little.
Mendoza
and so I arrived in this nice town. I will stay here a few days, then the trip will continue northward. The first day, I have done not so much, because the ride in the night bus still has its influence. Slept today until after 10: 00 today and almost missed my breakfast! Whether I here what activities do, that I don't know yet. Later on my trip in Argentina there are also a few activities to do. But at least I can retrieve the parcel sent here that my parents have. It's finally arrived, and Jimena will send it forward.
Number of the weblog: Santa Maria of Mike Oldfield, www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTyHlh-ilAs. The song is a small ode to the ship of Christopher Columbus. I found it to be applicable. Although it is needless to say that Amerigo Vespucci has discovered South America.
hasta la pasta! ciao!
Lot of love,
