Last night Steph and I did our laundry by hand for the first time. As we sat side by side outside our house, scrubbing our clothes in our individual basins, Steph looked up at me after we were half way through and said, "I'm bored." I laughed so hard! Thank goodness for our washing machines and dryers at home.
This morning we walked to the orphanage and I soon took out my digital camera and began taking pictures of the kids. They absolutely love the camera! They love to pose and then immediately see the picture afterwards. Once they learned that I can also shoot videos, they started breaking out the dance moves. I also video taped them singing, which I know I will cherish forever.
There are 2 volunteers that we met this morning that volunteered for 4 months last year and are back for another 6 months this year. Alison is from Wisconsin and Jane is from the UK. We talked for a while with them and heard many stories and learned more about the kids, and we also talked about planning out activities for the kids during the next couple of weeks. Since Jane and Alison have been here for so long, they are way more knowledgeable so I feel like I have so much to learn. They told us about the times they've gotten sick so now I am paranoid and use my hand sanitizer every 5 minutes or so! And they also told me that the 9-month-old has scabies, which I was really happy to hear after I held her for about 20 minutes. Awesome. After we walked to the field and played soccer, Steph and I left feeling very overwhelmed. We headed to Bonapet Cafe and met our friends Alison and Melanie (volunteers we met at orientation who work at the Ngong Medical Center) for our daily Coca Cola's (I've never enjoyed a Coke as much as I have here in Ngong) and french fries (which are referred to as "chips", and as of now is the only food I trust when I am eating out) where we debriefed and compared stories. Even though we spent only 4 hours with the children, there is so much to take in that 4 hours is about all I can handle at this point.
That's about all for now... Hope everyone is doing well at home. Enjoy a long, hot shower for me!!
