Hola from Naples!
Okay so I spent the night on the ship, and Nicole and I planned on heading to the coast for the day. We ended up meeting up with a girl named Amy, so she came with us to the train station. Apparently Naples is a crack ghetto. Since the economy is so bad, the mafia has pretty much taken over. It's just a dirty town and I was pretty sure we'd see a dead body being dumped into the water. Pretty much what we did in Naples was try to get the hell out of Naples as fast as possible. We took a train to Sorrento, which was about an hour long. This train was SKETCH; it was super hot and sticky and was pretty much like a metro train. Sorrento was really pretty though, and we did a good deal of shopping which was nice. I got some good gifts for people and bought some pretty things for me too. J The view was incredible, but eventually we got on a bus to Positano, which is further down the coast. The bus took this windy road on the side of the cliffs, it felt like a Disney ride. The roads are so narrow that the bus had to honk going around corners so other cars wouldn't keep driving at us. The views were amazing; you could see Capri and Anacapri from the beach. We actually grabbed dinner and just hung out for a few hours, which is the Italian way. With views like that and the amazing food, I could definitely get used to the Italian lifestyle. Overall, the day was amazing and we got to do everything we wanted to, but it was still very relaxed, which we definitely needed.
When we got back to the ship it was probably 11pm, so we dropped off our stuff and headed out to the bar in port. We picked up a cheap bottle of red wine and drank right outside the boat with a ton of people to celebrate the 4th of July. I kind of missed the fireworks and BBQ, but drinking wine out of plastic cups in Italy is pretty cool too.
The original plans for July 5th was to hike Mount Vesuvius then go to Pompeii. However, after finishing a bottle of wine and getting only 5 hours of sleep, we decided just to explore Pompeii. Pompeii is the city that was destroyed by Vesuvius when it erupted. It was pretty cool because some of the houses were still pretty well preserved considering they were hit by lava and have still lasted this many years. There were also bodies of people that had died trying to run from the lava, which was really sad. The town itself was a lot bigger than I had thought, but was cool to explore. We could see the volcano in the background. It hasn't erupted since, but is still active.
When we got back to Naples, we stopped at a little pizzeria to get some lunch. Naples is the actual home of pizza, and it was so good. The ingredients are so fresh; you can definitely taste the difference. As much as I love Papa Johns at 2am back in Altoona, I will definitely miss the pizza here. The ship had a BBQ for us to celebrate 4th of July when we got back and the food was amazing. I've definitely missed my dad's BBQ ribs since I've been here, so this was a good substitution. I'm exhausted and we only have classes tomorrow, then we're in Croatia. It seems like I've been gone for ages, but it's really only been 2 ½ weeks. Spain seems like months ago, and I can't believe we're already on our 3rd country. I'm excited to lie on the beach and relax for a few days.
Peace & Love,
Kati
