Being poor is not dirty. I really like that quote my aunt said the other day. Jon and I have been at the villages for the past 5 days. We stayed at my grandmother (father's side) at Kota Merudu for two days and then went to my mother's old village for three days: Kampung Narinang and Kaung. I was able to meet my grandfather for the first time who is 93 years old and still outside working hard on the rice paddy, barefoot. He is still in great condition, so I have good news for you mom! :) My family is so nice and welcoming to both Jon and I despite the language barrier and not knowing anything about us. They had old pictures of my family around the house, which was meaningful to me. Its pretty amazing how close you get to people you just met and they have definitely made an imprint on my heart. Its heartbreaking to know that it has been this long for my parents but anyone who lives this far away from each other knows that: NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS, despite the irony of the situation.
Jon has picked up a lot of Malay since his stay in the village, even my cousins were impressed! Last night, we bathed in the river next to their house, which I never thought I would do. When you come to these villages you need to have an open mind because their lifestyle is so simple and very different. And this goes back to my first quote: Being poor is not dirty. People think that because you bathe in the river or you have to use an outhouse means that its dirty, but let me just say that we managed and we are fine!!
And yes, we will have more pictures up soon! Miss you all and see you soon
