And I though Africa was dangerous! Today, not being the greatest city person, i had about a million near death experiences. Ok, so Amsterdam is like THE city to cycle in but its actually insane the number of cyclists! And what kind of ridiculous idea is it to drive on the right (aka wrong) side of the road?!
Not only did I get angry cyclists ringing their bells at me, I also got hooted at by trams and long stretchy buses! I now look like a crazy country girl and look both ways on each side of the road about five times and then madly sprint across... smooth!
So when I arrived in Amsterdam at about 6am this morning the outside temperature was 9 degrees... I really thought it was some kind of sick joke! I mean, how am I meant to show off my tan when I have to dress up like an eskimo? But actually the temperature was quite refreshing - nice to have practically zero humidity!
I wasn't able to check into my hostel until 3am so after i dumped my bag I set out to get lost in the big city... I found the Rijksmuseum which was ok seeing as it was free for people under 19. The early morning was creepily quite - none of the shops open till ten meanwhile I was walking around and morphing into an ice cube. To warm up I had basically no choice but to go shopping (for survival reasons) and H&M is officially the awesomest shop ever!
My hostel is, um, interesting. I splashed out on getting one in the centre of town (which is also the red light district... clever old me). And they kindly let me sneak into breakfast where I had museli by the bucketload (which wasn't the African style of raw oats with milk!). But its all good because although you can't smoke in the rooms, you are alowed to smoke anywhere else (he actually gave me a list of what you could smoke... I honestly had no idea there was such variety!)...
