Hmmmm 5am, that is not a good time to be gettin up in the morning, especially when ur really cosy and warm in a swag :( However we had to get up at this time so that we could see sunrise at Uluru. I couldnt believe just how cold it was at the time of the morning. However the sunrise was definately worth it and we even had breakfast and a cup of tea to warm us up :)
After sunrise we headed over to The Olgas, also known by its traditional Aboriginal name as Kata Tjuta. Its an absolutly incredible place! Its just so massive and walking through it makes u realise just how small and insignificant u r! The experience was just completely awe inspiring!
While we were walking through The Olgas Leith explained to us about Aboriginal culture. It's all really interesting and opened my eyes to a lot of things i didnt know about Aboriginals. He explained about their dream time stories, which is their way of explaining why things r. Its really interesting finding out their way of life. He also explained about Uluru and its significance to the Aboriginals and y u shouldnt climb it. In my head the easiest way of explaining it is to compare it to like an alter in a church, i mean u'd b offended if someone was climbin all over it so y should we do that to a sacred place for the Aboriginies? After learning more about it i decided that i would climb Uluru.
The one thing we all did notice was the Derek always kind of wandered off when Leith was talkin about Aboriginal stuff. When we asked Leith about it and he said it was because even tho Derek respects Leith he feels uncomfortable about a white guy talkin about Aboriginal stuff when white people cause so many problems and so much hurt for them. Derek actually spoke to us later and explained how it was hard for him and it didnt seem right that a white guy can talk about his heritage. He also told us how much it hurt when the girl on our tour had made those stupid comments the other nite.
We were finished our walk through The Olgas at about lunch time and then had the afternoon to ourselves. Most people went to the pool (which was apparently freezing) while a few of us went to the resorts shops. I went to try and find a hoop earring for my new piercing cause the stud had fallen out, however i couldnt get one at all so am just gonna hav to hope it doesnt fall out again!
We watched our second sunset at Uluru. This time we were a lot closer but there were a lot more people because its one of the main tourist spots for watchin the sunset. There were all these people from their fancy coaches with their champagne while we were a bunch of backpackers with our cider and beer, very classy!!! It was pretty amazing to see it closer because u could actually see the rock changing colour before ur eyes!
After dinner that nite we sat round the camp fire. We had some ice cream rolled Milo, which is a chocolate energy powered drink thing, and it is amazing, let me tell u! We also had marshmallows. We sat chatting for a while before bed which was fun, Dennis talked some more about Aboriginal stuff which was really interesting. We all ended up going to bed pretty early cause we'd had a long day and had another long one tomorrow! I didnt sleep as well because it was a bad time of the month so my body temperature was up and i was totally roasting! And u should try takin layers of clothes off in a swag, its not an easy thing to do!!! While i was lyin awake at some point, i could actually hear dingos howling which was pretty awesome, they were quite far away so it was quite faint, but it does hav the eery kind of sound that i expected.
