We're currently in Hanoi, Vietnam but obviously haven't updated you on our trip to Laos, which was amazing!! We didn't know what to expect of Laos but it was a really beautiful country.
We started off in Luang Prabang, which is the old capital of Laos and was really beautiful. We were supposed to get a slow boat here but there were a few complications at the Thai/Laos border, so we decided to take an overnight bus, which got us there a day earlier than the boat. We met some lovely people whilst on the bus/waiting for it and ended up spending the next week or so with them!
Whilst in Luang Prabang, a group of 6 of us hired a tuk-tuk driver for the day who took us to see some caves full of buddha statues, that people visited to pray and a National Park, which had a huge waterfall and lots of lovely lagoons. We stopped at a tribal village on the way back where lots of children were trying to sell us jewellery they'd made and were asking us for money!! We had some lovely dinners at some stalls and restaurants along the Mekong River - one night we decided to cook our own and were given a metal stove like thing where we cooked our meat and noodles.
After Luang Prabang we took a bus to Vang Vieng with one of the couples we met before. Vang Vieng was a bit of a party town but parts of it were still really beautiful and we saw some more caves here. This is where we also went tubing, which is where you hire a rubber ring and float down the river to different bars, which was fun. There wasn't much else to do here so we said our goodbyes and moved onto Vientienne (the captial of Laos). There wasn't much to see there so just spent a night before flying to Hanoi in a little propeller plane!!
We've been in Hanoi for a few days now and are quite honestly looking forward to leaving!! It's very very busy here, even more so than Bangkok - the roads are mental and you have to literally walk out in between cars to be able to cross them! We went to Halong Bay yesterday, which was stunning and we saw yet more caves but these were so much better! Off to Hue tonight on another overnight bus before continuing our journey down the south of Vietnam where hopefully the weather's a bit warmer than here!!
Lots of love, Kirsty & Sam xx
