Today is our final day in Chiang Mai. We've had a great time and really enjoyed the trekking. We left for the jungle at 9am on Saturday and stopped at a small village for supplies before heading to the elephants. We rode an elephant through the jungle for about an hour, which was really amazing. They're really tranquil animals and it was a relaxing ride, we even got to feed them bamboo sticks and bananas, which they loved. After lunch we started our hike up the mountains. It was pretty tough in places but really enjoyable, apart from when we saw the snakes and spiders!! About half way up we stopped at a waterfall, which was really cold but we welcomed it after tackling the difficult terrain! Another hour or so of trekking took us to a small village high up in the Chiang Mai jungle. We stayed in a traditional house made out of bamboo and had huge banana leaves for the roof. After a lovely dinner of Thai green curry, our guide Ao showed us some magic tricks and kept us all entertained. We then had most probably the worst night's sleep of our lives!! It was absolutely freezing, the temperature drops to around 5 degrees celsius in the night, Kirsty was scared that we had spiders sleeping with us and then at around 4am the locals killed 2 pigs to feed the guests of a wedding that was happening the next day. The sound was horrific!
After breakfast the next day, we went to the neighbour's home who had killed the pigs and saw them preparing the meat, they were eating it raw and offered some to us, which we politely declined! Sam did however try the Samsung whisky, which they brew from sugar canes, at about 9am!! The second day of trekking was more difficult as we had to climb some very steep parts with not much support, and then go back down the other side, our legs were like jelly at the end!! After the trek, we went bamboo rafting down the river. Sam got to drive the raft, whilst I sat down, which I thought would be best for me but I ended up getting absolutely drenched!!
Yesterday we just chilled at our pool as we were really tired and then went out to the Chaing Mai night market and picked up a few cheap clothes. We finally plucked up the courage to eat at a local stall, which was really tasty and very cheap so we will be doing that again. Today's my birthday and we're off to get a Thai massage and go out for dinner tonight. We've tried again to upload our photos but it's proving more difficult than we realised, so we're really sorry. For those of you that have Facebook, we'll put them on there and those that don't, maybe someone can show you them at some time. We will keep trying!!
Lots of love to you all, Kirsty and Sam xx
