Today we went on the South Coast and Glacier Hike with Iceland Guided Tours.
Great little tour company that take you in small mini buses, meaning its more personal than a big Ulsterbus and you get an input to stop if you see something you want to photograph.
The driver/guide Bryan was very informative but have to admit, since I've arrived, I've fallen asleep at every opportunity! Nothing changes Cinda, eh? You'd think I'd be full of energy as I'm not working, think its the lack of coffee!!
So they drove us the coastal route to the south of Iceland (Rejkavik is in the south west and is the most populated part of the island, inhabited by 2/3 of the 300,000 population.) We were taken to the glacier Sólheimajökull and walked/hiked with our crampons and stick along with our own personal guide :) It wasn't actually as cold as I thought it would be but we actually had to watch every step as you could fall into a crack or pool and either get stuck under the ice or washed out into the glacier river, neither of which seemed appealing. Enjoyed it and surprised myself at actually being brave (compared to my skiing fiasco). So got some nice pictures, learnt how the glacier was receding every single day and why and drank some glacier water and ate some ice. Amazed at how the glacier is actually on top of a volcano, doesn't seem to make sense but imagine when it erupts. Not the best thing I be told that its 9-10 weeks late at erupting!
So my question was... How do they alert people to get out of there homes if a volcano is about to erupt?
(The last eruption the people only had 15minutes to leave before the toxic gases would have reached them)
They have a text alert, from 112, that alerts everyone in the area of the volcano to leave. They don't have to have everyone's number, they find them magically, even visitors and send them out in the appropriate language! It's amazing! To think Antrim comes to a stop when there's a little bit of snow.
The rest of was spent at 2 waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. One of which we were able to walk behind, which was pretty cool.y
Loving Iceland and its outdoor pursuits :)
