On Saturday, we started the day with a whale watching tour, courtesy of 'Life of Whales'. Went on a purpose built whale watching boat called Rosin, into Faxafloi bay. The water was soo calm, with hardly any wind so apparent perfect conditions to spot whales.
Had literally sailed for 10 minutes when we spotted our first whale, a minke one. And this continued every couple of Minutes for the next two hours. Was soo exciting trying to spot them, me giving a little squeal every once in a while, but even harder trying to get a good picture. But definitely a first for us and no sea-sickness, so didn't need the sea sickness tablets after all!! On the way back to Reyjkavik, we stopped by a puffin island; they are such beautiful little birds. Some great pictures of them.
Great wee morning.
The afternoon we spent on a free walking tour of Reyjkavik, freewalkingtours.is, which was led by a student who does this twice daily. Visited some parliament buildings, churches, ponds, schools, the harpar and a few other cool places we hadn't yet came across. Learnt that Iceland is a very peaceful country with very few/no murders or theft. The last case to go the high court was about the custody of a cat when a couple split up!! That would be laughed at at home. But nice to know there are still places you don't have to worry about being mugged and can still leave you door unlocked. Also the last prime minister was a 70 year old lesiban, ex bikini model and the current PM, dressed up in drag for Gay Pride. So they're pretty accepting of everyone here.
So as Kenny enjoyed the whale watching soo much, he decided he had his sea legs and wanted to go out again... You'll never guess what for??
A fishing trip!! (Sea angling)
So we went to book onto a boat called Christina. I could take fishing or leave it, so asked could I just go on the boat and not fish, therefore not pay, and they were fine with that, happy days!!
So get onto the boat, they take us out to the desired location and a rod was put into my hand... OK then. Free fishing trip for me!! Pretty successful one at that:
8-4 to Kirstie!! Told ya I'd show ya up Kenny dear. Ok you did catch 3 big ones and I only caught one, but I think I still win. We caught cod and learnt that the red ones were locals and the green/brown ones were coastal. To top it off, they cooked what we caught there on the boat, so had dinner included. Lets just say I had a happy man on my arm that night as he got the fishing trip he had been talking about for months :)
So pumped full of adrenaline, we get back to the house and about 9.30pm, we decide to go on a bike ride. Haven't been on a bike in years, and don't think it helped the balance that I had a belly full of Pims ;), but off we went.
At home:
a) never dream of getting on a bike
b) definitely not at 9.30 at night, but did I mention, it doesn't get dark?? So it doesn't feel late even in the middle of the night, crazy.
Half way round, and a sore arse later, I say, 'do you know where you are going Kenny?'
'Nope.. I can't read a map!' And he's being looking at a map every time we stopped!!
But managed to find the Perlan and a geothermal beach, so that was a good wee bit of exploring. Luckily for us, our b&b was near the big church , Hallgrímskirkja, (great views from the top that we saw a few days earlier) which is the highest point in Reyjkavik, so anytime we were lost, we just looked up and headed that direction.
Real busy enjoyable day
