The morning began with a stop at the local Walmart for sunscreen and top down on the jeep. Our mission was to explore the beautiful beaches on the north side of Kaua'i...... Rain! We spent the next 30 minutes putting the top back on the jeep.
First stop, Wailua falls and Opeka'a falls on the east side and then watched some crazy surfers in Kapa'a. As we continued on to the north, we stopped at the Kilauea lighthouse and bird reserve where thousands of seabirds soar over the cliffs and nest in the trees.
This drive had many interesting views and things to see, taro farm, wet and dry caves and beaches. The rain and mist kept us from walks on the beach but the sights were beautiful.
Our first surprise of the day was our plate lunch from the roadside truck in Ha'ene beach park. I had fish tacos and Will had chicken and rice of course.
The road ended on the Na' Pali coast, WOW! Seeing it by air the following day gave it an entirely different perspective. As described in books, the cliffs seem to fold back on themselves like an accordion-folded fan made of green velvet. Pretty good description.
Our last stop was the town of Hanalei which is part of the scenic roadway. One lane bridges, rain forest and scenic views at every turn. We had dinner at Bar Acuda, a tapas bar with great food and spirits. As the clouds broke away from the mountains, our view was spectacular. Suddenly the scene was full of waterfalls and a mystical haze of the rainforest. Our expectation of the day was for sun and fun but the rain gave us an unexpected look at nature and this amazing place. Magical!
