All I can say is thank god Kim was with me when I stated my trip in Mexico. The taxi ride from the airport to our hostel was very scary!!!! The cab driver could not speak a word of English and about a minute after we had left the airport he started talking very loudly and trying to explain something to us. Of course we had no idea what the hell he was saying which just seemed to make him angrier...so he started screaming at us with his hands flying all over the place, at the same time driving about 150km an hour and swerving everywhere. It appeared that he was not going to drop us at our hostel ....OMG as you can imagine all sorts of things were running through my mind. Eventually I told Kim that we should just agree with him to try calm him down so there we were in the back of the cab saying Si Si Si! Anyway he eventually dropped us at the Zocalo - big plaza at heart of City and showed us on the map where our hostel was. SO there we were on the side of the street in Mexico City in the middle of the night with our backpakcs which seemed to weigh about a tonne!!!!
As it turns out he was trying to tell us that the street to our Hostel was closed off and he could not drop us outside. I am not quite sure if all the screaming and shouting was neccesary! But there you go...Welcome to Mexico City!!!
I am pleased to say we made it to the Hostel safely and headed straight to the roof top bar for a cold beer to calm the nerves. The barman Ruall was lovely and gave us some tips and directed us to a restuarant for a very late dinner!
Dinner was good...although the menu was in Spanish, no staff spoke English and what we got served seemed quite different to what we ordered!
The Hostel was interesting and not quite what the Lonely Planet described.....but this is my life for the next 5 months...so I am getting used to it. The toilets here make the toilets at work seem like absolute luxury!!!! :)
We had a few hours the next day to wonder around the Plaza check out the catherdral, Diego murals and the streets around out Hostel. Felt safe apart from constantly being stared at!
Anyway next stop...Puerto Escondido...
