Santorini is heaven. Its a good thing I didn't come here first or a probably would have never left!
I finally made it to Santorini on Wednesday, after waiting from 5am-10:30am at yet another port, waiting for the same ferry that was late to Crete as well! Stupid FB Preveli (the boat's name). I met some Canadian girls on the ferry and so we spent the day together exploring Fira (the Island's largest city...though large by no means), and guess what? I rode a donkey! (Haha, yes Kelsey!). To get to the port of Fira you need to walk down 600ish steps, and then the only way to get up is to walk (boo), take a cable car, or a donkey! It was a hilarious, amazing trek up from the port and our donkeys (though I think some were definelty horses!) pretty much raced up the steps... I was wondering if riding donkey's was just a silly tourist stunt, but then I saw people using donkeys outside of the city, so I felt more legit. There really is no road down to the port, so if you walk down, a donkey is a great way to get up. Truly fantastic. I also caught my first Greek sunset, which is pretty amazing. But to be honest, I think Salmon Point in Prince Edward County might beat them - people just don't take the time to watch the sunset when they are home. Which is what I love about the sunsets here. People actually stake out spots to watch the sun set, and sometimes clap at the end! (Tourists, not locals). But it is just nice to see people actually taking time out of there day to just sit and watch the sun set...cameras in hand. Haha, I really like it. Speaking of cameras, mine decided to break and so now I am using a DISPOSABLE camera! Oh jeeze... That night we went to this great resturant that overlooked the caldera (the cliffs of Santorini from the volcanic explosion). It was the first time I hadn't ate at a resturant alone this entire time! It was classy too and just really really great to get to enjoy great food with great company and a stunning view over the water and the rest of the island. I stayed a campsite that night, outside again, but sooo much better than Mykonos.
The next day I took a boat trip out to explore the (active) volcano that is just off of Santorini. Sounds more exciting than it was actually. It is just this small island with 3 craters that you can see...but because the volcano is the kind that slope inside and not upwards you can't actually see anything. No lava...just rocks :) But there were holes in the ground where it was about 70*C...so you knew the lava was done there all right! I went to Perissa beach that day, which has one of Santorini's famous black-sand beaches, and stayed at a hostel there.
I was hoping to rent an ATV in Perissa yesterday to check out the sites around the town, but as I didn't have my license that didn't happen. So instead I decided to climb a mountain! There is a this Ancient city of Thera at the top of this mountain in Perissa, and a little path that weaves its way up to the top. A lovely, relaxing way to spend a morning :) After that I headed to Oia, which is at the opposite end of the island - and is probably the place that you have seen pictures of whenever anyone talks about Santorini or the Greek islands. Gorgeous. Stunning. Amazing. White sandstone houses carved into the cliffs with blue shutters - everything overlooking the water....and I will leave you with that thought as my money is about to run out (as usual!).
Home (or at least North America) in 3 days!
