Eep! Its been a while since I last updated!
I think is was in Athens when I last wrote somthing....
Well from Athens I took a ferry to Mykonos, which is apparenlty suppose to be (one of) the biggest party islands in Greece. Which, wasn't much of a thrill to me - but it is a really nice island not to far from Athens so it is a good place to begin the island hopping. So I arrived in Mykonos at 12:30 am and the only budget accomodation is camping - so I went to Paradise Beach Club only to find out that they don't rent tents and thus I would be sleeping outside. Not a huge deal, but then I also find out that I don't have enough money to buy a lock and thus can't lock up any of my bags and so I need to keep them with me when I sleep. Which also means that I can't go anywhere because I can't leave my bags...sorry drunk Aussies who wanted me to come to the club! It was a lovely (ha!) night of dirt floor and mosquitos and people walking past at 5am just arriving back from the clubs. I got out of there as soon as I could in the morning and went to the island of Delos for a few hours, which was the most important sprititual place in Ancient Greece, with a huge Temple to Appollo. There is also a big hill (surprise!) to climb, and at the top there were a million Inuktishuk wannabees made by tourists - it was the strangest thing to see an Inuit symbol ontop of a hill in Greece, it shows how much of a pop culture thing such an important symbol has become. That night I checked into a different campsite where I was able to get a "cottage" (ie. cement room with dirty mattresses!)...but even though it was for 10 people I was the only one in it! Another failure in Mykonos. I had met some American girls that day so we just hung around the town which is actually vrey beautiful and had dinner next to the water. Overall though Mykonos was pretty crappy - wayyy too Spring Break for me, which was too bad because the town itself was lovely and I enjoyed roaming around it. (And getting super lost! The town was built to make invading Pirates lost! - and it works :) )
From Mykonos I went to Rhodes, landing in Rhodes Town, a beautiful Medival city where the "Old Town" is built into the existing Medival fortresses (thanks Crusaders!). I checked into a hostel and guess what? I was greeted by yet another hostel owner in his underwear!! No pants at all. Lovely. Unfortuanlty there isn't all that much to do in Rhodes (unless you have a car) and I was there for 5 days. I did meet 2 Americans and a Norweigan though and we spent my 2nd day in Rhodes together in a place called Epta Pigres...which the guidebook describes as a "Natural waterslide" HA! What it really is (and this is a big tourist site on Rhodes!) is an old aquaduct (ie. pitch black tunnel) that you walk through for about 150 meters. And then you are done. Ya! Haha...and to get there we had to walk 3 km from the highway, another 3 km back, and then another 3km to a beach on the other side of the highway. The people I was with though were great so it was a good day. Sadly though, when we tried to see Harry Potter (Ahh!) we were told that it wasn't coming until Agust 25th (Noooo!!!). The next day I left for Lindos a beach town an hour from Rhodes. I walked around aimlessly trying to find a Pension in this town with NO streetnames..eventually finding one which was just a room off of someones house in the middle of the courtyard. It was great though because it was away from all of the tourists and I had some great hand gesture conversations with the old lady who ran it who didn't speak a word of English. I pulled out some pretty awesome Good Mornings and Thank Yous in Greek though!
From Rhodes I went to Crete...after a ferry (mini) disaster. My ferry was suppose to leave Rhodes at 3am..so I arrived at the ferry dock at 1am...4:30 am comes around and no ferry. I am trying so hard not to fall asleep when two guys come up and inform me that the ferry isn't coming until 7am! So I have a lovely sleep on the ferry dock (surrounded by a few other stranded travellers). I later find out that people were told that the ferry was going to be late when they booked their ferry days before! But nobody thought to tell the 10 or so people who were camping at the dock! Boo! I evetually arrived in Crete at 9pm the next night (5 hours late) meaning my Crete time was cut down to only 2 days.
Today I spent the day hiking through the Samaria Gorge, a 12.8 km hike that goes down into the Gorge and then through the gorge...taking about 5 hours. And I will talk about this later as computer is about to run out! And I need sleep and to get out of this crazy loud internet cafe!
