After a very early start - we both woke up at 4am - we walked to the Trevi Fountain. The first thing we heard was the roaring of the water against the rocks and mum and I said to each other Ït's the Trevi Fountain". Being in Rome became real for both of us. As it was still very early the city worker was still cleaning around the fountain, we all stood back while he finished. We took lots of photos from every different angle and then we sat down and watched the other tourists.
I went first and threw the coin into the fountain, I made a wish and it is said that if you toss a coin into the fountain, you are sure to come back to Rome. Then it was mum's turn. As she went down I felt a part of us will always be in Rome and we could always come back. Then as mum's coin went "Plop", there was sense of happiness in the both of us and we looked at each other and smiled. As I got closer to the water, I was amazed at how many coins were in there. As we were just about to leave, from the corner of my eye I saw something floating on the water. I went closer and realised that someone had thrown in five red roses. I don't understand why they threw the roses in but if someone does can they tell me?
And then we got lost! As we thought we'd take a quicker route back we soon figured out that we had absolutely no idea where we were going. So I think after 15 minutes we figured out - "hold on - we don't know where we're going!". We made up for getting lost by getting two cups of gelati for breakfast (lemon and lemon!). I've realised that mum is not the best Italian speaker and that no matter how bad your Italian is - after 4 or more tries, they'll finally get it. One way of communicating is by waving your hands around in hand gestures!

Team Nixon Love your post Sare, beautifully written, thanks for the giggles! So glad to hear you have caught onto the Italian language so quickly hehe! Can't wait for the next post already :) Xxoo
Nicole P Really enjoyed reading you post Sar. I totally agree - there's something very special and peaceful about Trevi Fountain. That was such a wonderful idea going so early in the morning (even if it was because you couldn't sleep). And gelati for breakfast is an Italian must. I also enjoyed the giggles.
Steve G'day Sarah, Great Blog entry. Yes waving the hands to communicate is certainly a sign of Italian speech. No idea about the roses I'm afraid. Gelati for breakfast wow! Keep the entries coming. Love Granddad
Donna Trafford Hi Sarah, I'm amazed you didn't go for a swim in the fountain seeing its been 40 degrees. Hope you are trying to speak a little italian as well, if not you can just wave your arms around and help your mum. Keep up the blogging I feel like I'm there with you. donna
Donna Smith Hi Sarah, you write beautifully and make the reader really picture all you and your mum are seeing ! Thank you. Your trip so far sounds amazing - you will both never forget this time together. As for the roses? I did a google search to see if I could answer your question and I was unable to find anything other than a lot of people complaining about the men that sell roses to you around the Trevi fountain. Perhaps someone bought some roses from the rose sellers and decided to place them in the water? Sorry I could not help out on that one. Keep having a ball! Donna (Smith)

Natalie Brown Amazing blog Sarah! It reminds me of when I was there with my mum and brother 12 months ago looking for the Trevi Fountain, walking though the streets of Rome and having to pinch myself to prove I was really there. Enjoy Rome and as they say "when in Rome, do as the Romans do!"
