After departing beautiful Prague, Matt and I arrived in Budapest, Hungary after an overnight train. Budapest was a city we didn’t know a lot about before arriving there, I had heard it was a great place to visit and had it strongly recommended to me by my old boss who lived there for a time. It definitely didn’t disappoint and turned out to be better than we expected!
On our first day we found our way to our accommodation, a hostel which happened to be called ‘Elvis Budapest’. Despite the cheesy name, it was a great place to stay, the host was a really friendly helpful guy, the facilities were good, we were central to the city and had a lovely breakfast each morning (salami, cheese, bread and coffee!!). After dropping off our gear at the hostel we hopped back on the train and visited a small town called Vac, about an hour out of Budapest. This was a lovely little town on the Danube river, beautiful weather (if not a bit too hot – 32 degrees!). We ate lunch beside the river, explored the small town and headed back to Budapest after a relaxing afternoon there.
We spent a lot of time in Budapest enjoying the heat and the local Pivo (beer) to cool us down (it was about 30-35 degrees everyday)! We walked, caught trams and the metro around the city, we had the Hungarian experience and went for a swim at traditional baths, visited the local market and ate fresh produce and salami, and spent ½ a day at Margaret island where we hired bicycles, ate lunch in the park and enjoyed the scenery.
Like some of the other cities in Eastern Europe it was a large capital city but it didn’t seem like it, there were lots of people but it still felt small. The architecture was beautiful and old and even new buildings were built in the traditional style, I think I saw only one building in the whole city that looked like it would be at home in Auckland! Hungary got top marks from both Matt and I: value for money, great weather, good food, excellent public transport and accessibility by foot, and a lot of the sights and scenery were free!

Migue Canadian. There is a mountain of new ioamroftinn coming into play each day as to the state of the world economy.France is now under pressure on its credit rating and the FTSE and DAX have taken huge hits in the past 4 days alone.I believe owning property is the best safe haven for your cash and, more importantly, having a roof over your head!People need houses/flats and rental suits a few but the majority want to own their own castle. The ageing population bit applies the world over and not just to Hungary. And, most individuals want to improve their lot by moving to bigger and better property when they can. So there is always potential for a lively housing market when the economic climate improves. If you wish to continually talk down the market in Hungary that's your prerogative.Obviously you have an ulterior motive for doing that?
