From Bangkok we travel onwards and to the north western part of Thailand. It is a long drive and enroute we stop at roadside restaurants for yummie thai cuisine.
After a good six hours we arrive first to Sukothai, which once was the capital of Thailand, where we do a lovely bicycle tour in the Sukothai Historical Park. It is a park full of ruins from the 13th and 14th centuries. This is also part of the program and introduction for all participants in this area. We travel on to Phitsanulok where Green Lion has the most fab location in Wang Thong close to the river (where you can raft!)and very simple accommodation close to nature and open skies. You stay here while working for the elephant project. This entails helping the mahouts (elephant trainers) in their daily upkeep of these amazing and fascinating aminals . All of the elephants here are tamed and are here to be free from working as tourist attractions. You participate in bathing, feeding and caring for the elephants within the ressort - which also is a hotel popular for business and private functions. We dine at a lovely Rainforest restaurant - fantastic curry and tom yum, again, accommpanied by a crazy parrot and not to mention the cat finding comfort in Benedicte's lap J
The night turns into a bit of drinking on the balcony of the hotel as we are entertained by the sounds from some wacky karaoke. We establish once and for all that Sang Som is not a whiskey but rum, taste and effect is evidently the same it was those ten years ago when I for one last ventured down a bottle. But no dancing on the table - i must be getting old…
