Kieran & Emma:
Hiya!
You find us in Bali, where we've been enjoying our last few days before d-day. D for departure!
We have had a brilliant last month on the Indonesian islands. They haven't exactly been the tropical paradises we expected, they are too developed for that, but then again it is high season and this was the one place we didn't do much (any) research on, so no complaints! Anyone wanting an Asian beach holiday though- head to the Thai islands.
The exception to this were the Gili Islands, which were breathtaking in places, probably the closest we'll get to our own small Robinson Crusoe adventure. We spent 9 days on the most popular island, Gili Trawangan, and used that as a base to explore the rest. Even here though, all you had to do was walk 10 minutes up or down the coast and you had a beautiful beach all to yourself.
We were joined for 8 of the days by a Canadian couple, Stu and Char, who we had met back on Lombok, and we had a whale of a time drinking, cycling, snorkelling, drinking a bit more and playing poker. Thanks to their tuition we are now moderately adequate competitors! We don't like them though, they still have 4 months left of their trip!
The snorkelling was especially awesome, we saw 4 giant turtles in separate spots. Kieran dove down to swim about 3ft from one and was quickly lambasted by our guide for scaring it. He still says he'd do it again!
We are now in Sanur, Bali. Yesterday Tim and Rachael left us, after a very funny 3 days, to go looking for Komodo dragons. It was very, very sad to see them go, we almost went with them!
Next stop is Singapore, where our only plan is to go on the Night Safari and get some chillaxation next to the pool. Emma is frantically trying to catch Kieran up on the tanning stakes!
Speaking of the small one, she's been drunk quite a few times in the past month; here are some excerpts:
Upon being tickled- 'Kieran, you've damaged my eternal organs!'
On Portugal- 'the beaches are so nice, there are loads of little alcoves you can swim into!'
On the sky- 'the weather's looking omnibus!'
Finally, thank you very much to everyone who took time to post on our message board and make comments on our blog etc, we always looked forward to reading them and they usually made us smirk at the very least :-)
We've had a magical trip but are now looking forward to getting home and seeing our family and mates. Still wouldn't mind another month though...
See you next week!!!
