Well I really wanted to see The Lakes District so considering how hard it was to get around in The Peaks District, I decided to hire a car. It was a light blue VW Polo and about 10 times nicer than my car back home but Jasper loves me more so that's ok! Anyway, I picked up the car and drove back to the hostel to pick up my bags before driving up to The Lakes District. Back at the hostel I met an Aussie guy, Byron who'd been keen to get out and see the Lakes but hadn't made it yet. Byron turned out to be pretty well the male verison of me, only nicer so it worked out well. Turned out he was going to see the Halle Orchestra that night so he pulledin a favour with a friend and got me a free ticket too (Thanks Neill!) The concert was great, not your typical symphanyu and had a great light show, fireworks, cannons and I ask you, what concert is completer withough a couple of Russian dudes firing muskets?
So anyway, after the concert and after I was pretty well convinced Byron wasn't an axe weilding psycopath, we headed off to the Lakes District and got seriously lost. Machester is a maze of one way, dead end, pedestrian only streets and yes, the A56 is very different to the M56!
We finally got up to the lakes and found a place to stay in a little village that had a beautiful rushing stream going though it and a large old house that dominated the surrounding area.
Next morning we headed off into Winddermere, grabed some breakfast and wennt on a boat trip to Ambleside. It was beautiful but coildand we could see snow on the tops of the surrounding hills. When we got to Ambleside, we climbed up a mountain that ovewrlooked the lake and townn. It was so so SO beautiful! and on the way up and down we drank out of a fresh stream which had some of the nicest tasting water i've ever had in my life.
We got back to town and sat watching the swans. There was an old lady sitting on a nearby seat with a very michievious swan pecking at her. You'd think it would learn its lesson as she obviously had the upper hand and kept swatting it away like an anoying grandson or something "NOT NOW dear!"
We just missed the ferry back and so had a look in the shops nad then went into a coffee shop for a while until thge next ferry came. On the boat on the way back we did what every red blooded Aussie does in the middle of winter, ate icecream!
After getting back in the car, we weent on to Derwent waters where we saw the lake, had dinner in a local pub and played a game of darts. Then we headed back to Manchester wher I headed to Glasgow the next day and Byron was going down to london. It was really great travelling with someone. Stops me being lonely and he payed for petrol which was awesome.
I caught the bus to Glasgow and spent today looking around. My favourite so far is the glasgow green where every Glaswegian has the right to grase his cattle or sheep or hang out his washing on. Tomorrow is another sightseeing day, hopefully tonight i'm going to a folk gig at one of the local pubs. I wanted to go to a Ceilidh (pronounced K-Lee) but couldn't find one on a tuesday night.
Until next time! xxoo
