A Setback
I know, I know, I need to update my blog. But my entry for Jordan may have to wait. (There is also the chance that I will not be able to upload pictures).
So my Macbook is broken (I'm still trying several different options and have emailed Apple, but it doesn't seem good). In terms of financing the repairs, it is fortunately AUC's fault that my laptop is broken, so they will be paying for the repairs. But I'm getting ahead of myself here...
For my Colloquial Arabic class we had an exam today, and part of it was an oral exam in which we had to record our answers. Since AUC is still not fully functional, they had asked us to bring our own headsets to the language lab (I think headsets are pretty much the only thing that distinguishes a language lab from a regular computer lab, but that could just be me). No one in our class has their own headset and no one was going to buy their own, especially when AUC would not have reimbursed us (at least not without a lot of hell-raising from us). So we decided that we would all bring our laptops and headphones in and record our responses in the classroom.
We got our laptops out and put them on the tables, but after some discussion, we decided as a class to do our 1/2 hour lesson before taking the exam. So Jessie and I (who were sharing a table) pushed our laptops towards the edges of our desks to keep them out of the way until the exam. And then about 3 minutes later, the top of the table flipped up and sent our computers tumbling to the ground. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that the tables that we use in our classrooms regularly flip up, because they require the rolling legs to be locked into a slot in order to stay level. But since the legs roll and the slots aren't particularly secure, they often become unlocked unexpectedly. Books, papers, and occasionally food and drink fly off the tables, and sometimes they hit students and/or teachers in the face. Stupid tables for classrooms, in my opinion, but I am a little angry right now. (As far as I know, mine is the only laptop to have been damaged by such an incident).
Jessie's computer recovered, but mine will still not turn back on. I've tried fully charging the battery, and taking the battery out and just using the cord power, in addition to letting it rest and resetting the PRAM and it still does not turn on. It goes to the blue startup screen with the apple, spins and thinks for a minute or two, and then restarts itself and does the same thing over and over again.
I think I have myself a broken computer. Which sucks, because there are no actual Apple Stores in Egypt. I will try going to the AppleLine store in the big mall, but I don't know if they have a Genius Bar or what, or if they will even accept my warrantee (which I don't have a copy of). If I'll have to ship my computer back to the states to get it fixed, I honestly don't know if I will do it. I don't want it getting lost or any more damaged along the way, not to mention the time it will take.
Regardless, I am going in to talk to someone tomorrow to get them to agree to pay for any repairs I have to get. If AUC provided functional language labs, none of this would have happened.
I apologize for the angry update. I will, insha'allah, write a post soon about my trip to Jordan. It was lovely and amazing, and I fell in love with the country, so the next post should be a happier one. In the meantime, I apologize if it takes me awhile to respond to emails or anything. I'll be relying on the computer labs.
