Hello peeps! Although it has only been a few weeks since we last blogged, it seems much longer due to our many escapades, that we shall now try to detail in the least boring/most exciting way possible depending on your current pessimism/optimism at time of reading!!...
From Koh Samui we took a ferry to Koh Pha-ngan to indulge in some famous full moon "buckets". When we arrived on the island we had to navigate our way to Than Sadet which is on the eastern coast of Pha-ngan. We should have realised what we were in for when the minibus driver, who originally greeted us so gleefully from the ferry, heard our destination request, laughed and passed us on to his colleague, who in turn was equally miffed that he would be the one taking us.
There aren't roads so much in Koh Pha-ngan, as there are areas with less jungle that people attempt to drive along. After about 45 minutes of fairly treacherous roads we were dropped at the top of an even more treacherous road, and told a car would pick us up in 15 mins, from a shack which we took a seat in (it may have been someones house, but we were tired!). After half an hour, and Kerri telling Tom to stop worrying about the (likely) possibility that there was in fact no-one coming for us, we decided to phone the resort. Kerri was just about to ask if someone was coming to collect us when our credit ran out...at least this is what a helpful, if somewhat hyperactive, and most certainly tipsy Thai gent told usafter shouting at the automated, out-of-credit Thai message on our phone. At this point we were a little worried that the night would be spent with this intoxicated. ADHD sufferer...however, it turned out he was more than happy to drive us to Than Sadet, for a small fee...an offer we accepted (upon reflection, probably not the best idea befor you start shouting at us mothers!). Luckily we arrived at Mai Pen Rai Bungalows (Thai for "no problem"...the irony) in one piece, and due to our late arrival all the basic bungalows that we were supposed to be in, were full. We were up graded to a Swiss Family Robinson- esque bungalow situated on the rocks of the bay (no monkey butlers however). It was undeniably worth the hassle...hammocks and the study of illegal botany seemed mandatory, everyone was seriously chilled and we got used to the roads fairly quickly!
On our second night we went to the infamous Full Moon Party, which was everything it had promised to be...body paint, buckets of vodka+red bull for 5 pounds, some tidy tuneage and lots of fire all laid out on Haad Rin beach...a good night fo sho! We also met a cool couple, who were on the honeymoon, called Andy and Kez (Kerri wanted to be best friends now!), who told us a story about how he had fought a gecko when it woke him up in the night...he tried to stangle it but it was persistent, so he had to hold its head under water until it finally gave up... think this may have been exaggerated slightly!
After Koh Pha-ngan we got another ferry and then a bus to Krabi (on the south-west coast) where we stayed at a place with some cool gamblin, golfing Norwegians, who charmed us in to a game of poker, and then cleaned us out! While in Krabi we rented a moped and went on a very scenic route to find the Tiger Cave Temple. After a few hours spent searching for the place, and a distractive haircut had by Kerri it was the afternoon and we felt a little useless for not finding the temple. Luckily some shakey directions from Kerri's hairdresser proved very informative and we arrived. The temple was very beautiful, but the main event was scaling 1,237 steps to the top of the adjacent mountain, where a golden Buddah would be waiting and his monkey minions would gret us on the ascent. The monkeys were really cool and we got some great pictures...the climb was not so cool, however people on the way down assured us it was worth the hike up, so we persisted and they turned out to be telling the truth!
From Krabi another boat journey would take us to a beautiful island off the south-western coast called Koh Phi-Phi.
Stay tuned folks!!
Lots of love Kez an Tom. xxxx
