From Donna and Clyde: We are nearing the end of a hectic few days in New York. We arrived on Sunday afternoon and after over 2 hours clearing immigration at JFK, we were very relieved to finally make it into Manhatten and headed straight off to Times Square.
On Monday morning, we started a race with the rain and headed straight down to the Staten Island Ferry for a trip across to Staten Island and view of the NY Skyline, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Clyde and I went to Liberty Island and Ellis Island the last time we were here (in 2000) and the Statute of Liberty is closed for 12 months for renovation, so we basically just did a "drive by" so Molly and Toby could see them. After that, we headed back up town via Battery Park, shopping as we went. The highlight for Molly and Toby was definitely FAO Schwartz Toy Store with the "Big" Piano and some amazing toys, and my highlight would have to be the birthday cupcake that Molly bought for me that was AMAZING!!
On Tuesday we started the day at the Empire State Building, enjoying the New York Skyline, once again trying to beat the rain (which we only just managed). We then headed to the 9/11 Memorial and Ground Zero. Last time we were here, we went to the top of the World Trade Centre and the skyline seems so empty without the dominating twin towers, but it was great to see the new developments taking place. The Memorial is lovely and once it is fully open to the public, it will be an amazing open space. After the Memorial there was more shopping to be done, and then we had lunch at a Peanut Butter Sandwich cafe where both Molly and Toby were beaten by their peanut butter and fluffy marshmallow sandwiches and we went to The Avengers in Times Square to escape the rain.
Today we have been to Grand Central Station, done some more shopping and spent the afternoon biking around Central Park. After that we stopped off so Clyde and Toby could get their hair cut by an older Russian couple in Hells Kitchen who had a massage parlor in the back room (a world away from Hair Phenomena at home). Not sure if they were the ones doing the massaging! The weather has meant we are going to miss a couple of things we had wanted to do, and the kids are pretty tired with all the walking, but overall, we have really enjoyed The Big Apple!! Today has been the first day since Beijing that we have had to use sun block, so the weather is finally looking up! Off to Washington tomorrow!
From Molly: Over the past 3 days we have been in New York shopping (!!) and looking round - it is amazing.
From Toby: We went to a toy store called FAO Schwartz and I got a Gummi Bear the size of your hand and bacon flavoured lip balm. We went to see the Avengers. The Dunkin' Donuts here are THE BEST EVER!
Best thing in New York
Donna: Shopping!!
Clyde: Wandering the back streets!
Molly: Avengers
Toby: My gummi bear
