From Donna and Clyde: We caught a train from Penn Station on Thursday morning and headed off to Washington DC. After the busy streets, traffic and sky scrapers of New York it was lovely to arrive at a city with a low skyline, wide streets, friendly locals and brilliant sunshine. Our apartment was located only one block from the White House so we dropped off our luggage and headed straight out and spent the afternoon with what seemed like every middle school in the US wandering the parks, memorials and monuments that make up Washington. Without exception, they were spectacular! The only disappointment was that the Reflecting Pool leading up to the Lincoln Memorial was emptied for reconstruction work. We will just have to go back again and see it in its full glory! On Friday we headed to the Smithsonian and spent the morning at the Natural History Museum and the afternoon at the Air and Space Museum.
On Saturday morning, before our flight to Orlando, we spent some time in the American History Musuem, but we did not get anywhere close to seeing it all. The musueums are all stunning and have free entry, and in terms of the quality of displays and interactive displays they are definitely something for Te Papa to aspire to!
We are now in Orlando, and deep in the super-sized world of Theme Parks. Molly and Toby are in bed watching TV and shattered after another full day at Universal Studios. It has not taken us long to work out that we can feed our whole family at a theme park with one adult meal and one child meal between the four of us and that is just one example of the mass super-sizing. Getting us all to agree on what to order is another story! We have been shopping this afternoon so a new suitcase has now been added to the "must have" list! We will leave it to Molly and Toby to blog next time about the many highlights at the theme parks - but thanks to Joanna for the tips (especially about how wet we would get at the Islands of Adventure)!
Highlights from Washington:
Donna: The stunning monuments and memorials - to numerous and all to beautiful to choose one.
Clyde: Smithsonian Museums
Molly: Washington Monument
Toby: White House

Joanna Yay, you are in our fave - Orlando!! I have really loved reading your blog all the way but must admit I've been looking forward to you reaching Orlando :) I did wonder if you'd be too exhaused to blog after theme park days though! I see you are now totally in summer clothes so that must be nice. Have heaps of fun...... we are already plotting about how and when we could get back there!
