The morning after the wedding I woke up on the sofa fully clothed at 6:30am just as the world cup draw had finished, which I had a vested interest in. Before I could be bothered to work out which games I'd got I knew I had to actually go to bed for a bit. The draw was the hot topic of conversation at the local coffee shop where we all sat with Kev & Jane's friends while taking the dogs for a walk. The highlight of the day was also football related, going to watch Sydney FC v North Queensland Fury (featuring Robbie Fowler) in the A League. Kev gave me a Sydney shirt and we sat in the Cove with the newlyweds Nick & Emma (who had quite rightly delayed their honeymoon to attend the game), which is at the kop end of the Sydney ground and is their ultra passionate element.
Well the atmosphere was fantastic for the whole game, they never stopped singing, the only gripe would be that as we were only 5 rows from the front the giant Italian style flags kept getting in the bleeding way and so I probably spent more time watching the big screen behind us. They won 4-1 and yet it could have been more for both teams. We had planned to head to a club in the city but Steve was knackered and I had a cold from leaving the air-con unit on all night in Fiji. Instead we decided to head to a sports bar in the Star City casino which I had been told had a 'theatre' for watching Premier League football, I was intrigued.
Well they were telling the truth, what a brilliant place to watch sport…they had 10 rows or so of cinema-like seating in front of three giant screens, with beer holders in the seats in front. One mystery was that the Asia-Pacific Poker Tour was being played in the casino and was on the biggest of the screens, yet it was live and so they couldn't show what cards each player had, so what was the point in having it on the screen!?
Anyway watched the first half of Pompey v Burnley, in which there was an outrageous penalty given (me with my referee hat on even on holiday), and then headed back to North Epping to follow the Wednesday game on the internet. Wish I hadn't as we lost, should have gone to bed.
A quiet relaxing day for a change, fitting as it was a Sunday. Played football with Steve in a birthday match for one of his mates which was good fun, especially as beer replaced the usual water/Gatorade as refreshments. I set up a goal with a cross in the corridor of uncertainty and scored a penalty in the shoot-out (only just after it bounced off both posts). Had kangaroo steaks in the evening for the first time which were very tasty, would definitely have them again.
