Slept in School Huts & were awoken at 10:30pm to begin our ascent. Unfortunately this was delayed due Carl having a bout of sickness & we eventually began our ascent at 11:30pm.
The ascent was unbelievably difficult, almost vertical climbs over screed & volcanic ash in very, very cold conditions. Everyone suffered some form of altitude sickness problems, particularly Carl who was ill again. We were all ecstatic to reach Gilmans Point & took the decision to carry on to Stella Point. Twenty minutes later after a very scary traverse across the Glacier we reached Stella Point. A decision then had to be made on whether to carry on to Uhuru Peak. The weather was extremely bad with high winds & extreme minus temperatures, cameras had frozen & all our water bladders were solid but our guide said it could be done. We therefore decided to try the final push & after a frightening battle against the elements we made it to the highest peak of Uhuru.
Then began the descent. We came came down via the Marangu route, which was almost vertical but consisted of volcanic ash. The descent was therefore quick & relatively easy but very bland. We stopped off at Kebo Huts for a quick meal & change of clothes & then carry on down to Horumbo Huts for our over night stay where we arrived at 3:15pm. A total ascent & descent time of 15 hours 45 minutes of continuous trekking & climbing.
