A blog does not do Tonsai justice. Stories will have to be told in person. One word... Amazing. After 5 days amidst the rocks our bodies needed a rest. We had a great place for the job. The Similan Islands.
The Similan Islands are one of Thailand's national parks ans are consistently rated among the top 10 dive sites in the world. We had a boat take us out on 2 dives the first day, leave us to stay in some waterfront bungalows in the park and return the next day to take us on another 2 dives.
The beaches were covered in sugar white sand and the water visibility was about 100 ft with great snorkeling right off the beach. We did 4 drift dives. The current allowed us to sit back and relax as we drifted past giant sea fans, sea snakes, sharks, octopus, eels, turtles, lion fish, scorpion fish and more. The water was about 80 degrees and the air temperature the same. It held up to it's name as being one of the top dive destinations in the world.
As for the island itself it was great. The bungalows were clean and comfortable. Glad I spent the extra Baht and got a bungalow instead of a tent. Living above the tents, hanging from the trees, were hundreds of large fruit bats. They would fight each other and squawk all day and into the night. Very cool to look at but I'm glad I didn't have them pooping on my tent all night long.
