Unfortunately we woke up to a very cloudy day so our planned visit to Pike's Peak wasn't going to happen. Instead we went back to Garden of the Gods to do some hiking and photography. After being in a cars, it was nice to start moving. We saw a number of mule deer and friendly rabbits as well as some fantastic stone formations.
The clouds didn't break so we left around mid-morning and headed to Alamosa where we planned to visit the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The dunes were spectacular - even higher than the ones we saw many years ago in Death Valley. These are the highest dunes in North America. We climbed quite high but were concerned about the very black looking clouds that were over the dunes. As we were racing back, we were pelted with raindrops and wind-blown sand.
While still in the National Park, we decided to also visit Zapata Falls. After a very long and very bumpy 3 mile drive, we still needed to do a 1/2 mile hike up a rocky trail to reach the falls. We were advised that we should be prepared to wade in the cold water stream to the cave where we would be able to see the waterfall. Luckily the water was only 4 inches deep but it was very cold - said Kevin. Karen managed most of the hike without getting her feet wet :-) Once we got to the cave, we saw the very powerful waterfall shooting in the canyon.
