Kevin and Joannie on tour
Thank God for Joan's sister and Facebook. We awoke to a notification from Christine that the strike was over. Javiera, the administrator at the cabana, advised us to go to the LAN office. We did so but in our own time. On the way we stopped at the bank to collect a card Joan had left in the cash machine. The lady behind the desk pulled out a whole pile of them so it seems it's a common enough mistake. At the LAN office there was a queue of about a hundred people. Tickets with a number on were handed out. We were right at the back of the queue, in the full sun and the queue was not moving. However it was generally good natured and officials from the local government handed out water and free bags. It took about three hours to finally get to the door of the office. Once in we understood why. People were making very complex changes, not only to their flights from Easter Island to Santiago or Tahiti, but to their flights in several days' time. One couple were over an hour and were still there when we left. In all it took five hours. we were glad to have tickets but we need to stay two more nights more (a total of three extra nights.) Back at the cabanas we asked Javiera if we could stay two nights more. She said she didn't think it was a problem but would check with Carolina the owner. She came back and said that tonight was fine but although there was a vacancy tomorrow, Carolina did not want to let us have it in case a longer booking came in for the Christmas break. She also wanted to put up the price. It was clear Javiera was embarrassed so we didn't make a scene. Whilst cooking dinner Kevin and I discussed the situation and decided to take matters into our own hands and make our own booking for tomorrow in a new place. Dinner was an adventure. We had bought some dehydrated potato slices with a powder for sauce that was meant to be baked in the oven to make a potato gratin. With a bit of experimentation and compromise, we made it in the microwave. The soya burger broke up so we made a literal hash with peas and sweetcorn.
