Kevin and Joannie on tour
Today was an easy day. We took our laundry for a service wash. We also visited the bank to take out money. Here in Mendoza province, cash is the order of the day. The car hire firm wanted cash, the apartments want cash and the petrol stations want cash. The problem is that foreign travellers can only take out a maximum of 1500 Argentinian Pesos at a time which is about £120 with charges. You can do this twice in the same day. Threads in discussion boards suggest that this is so Argentinian banks can get double the commission.
We drove up to Castillos de Pincheira about 30 miles out of town. This is a gorge along Rio Malargue with unusual rock formations. There was a place that you could picnic, barbeque or swim at but we had not come prepared.
Having seen the rock formations we drove back into town and found the planetarium which has a blue pyramid.
Being back early (4 pm) we thought we would go and have a drink in one of the cafes and bars, however all were shut. They take their siesta very seriously here. It lasts from 1 pm to 5.30 pm. The only folk on the street are a few confused tourists - like ourselves.
We ate an early dinner and planned tomorrow's trip.
