Saturday & Sunday
Waking up upside down in my bed Saturday I knew it was going to be a difficult hangover day. Lauren was up earlier than me, when I eventually made it to the restaurant I'd ripped my travel bag, had broken my only pair of flip flops and was generally struggling. The food here was lovely so I had one of the pizzas off the menu and then we stayed there a bit longer to enjoy the pool facility before moving onto our next place. The food the previous evening had also been delicious so I'd been well fed for a few days! I chatted to a friendly couple who were also travelling (from Somerset and Liverpool) while Lauren went off for a walk and back to the room area to use the wifi as it was playing up in the main restaurant. Michelle, Kate and Leanne had already left for a spa day so I didn't get to say goodbye but we both added Kate on Facebook to keep in touch as they were going to similar islands to us next. A few hours later we hopped in a tuk tuk to endure the 30 minute journey.
Our new home for the next 2 nights was 'Oasis' guesthouse in Kep. When we arrived I really wasn't feeling well and the heat was unbearable. We were very unproductive and aside from having a nice cold shower, we lay in the bar area in swinging cushioned chairs waiting for it to be an ok time to go to bed. At this point we were sick of people smoking around us, everywhere you go everyone smokes and it's hard to escape. When you are in need of a break and some clean fresh air it's still hard to avoid - something we both miss with the smoking bans in England! By 9.30pm we were both tucked up in bed. I was really concerned about bugs in the room after seeing a huge spider in the bathroom so I'm surprised I even slept so well but I think i was still really tired From the night before.
The following day I was wide awake by 7am so got up and sat in the restaurant area enjoying the peace and quiet and reading my book. The owners wife, Amelie was looking after her 4 month old daughter, Morgan. They are a French Canadian family and were very friendly and welcoming with her husband laughing at how he'd noticed my lifelessness the night before. Lauren was still snoozing by 9am so I had breakfast on my own and when she got up we sorted ourselves out to find the beach.
Now, Lauren's navigation skills are usually very good. I had mentioned to Lauren that one of the guys who worked at our hostel had said we should get a push bike to the beach but she said it wasn't far. We set off and I managed to buy a horrendous pair of white flip flops for $2, better than nothing! We'd chosen a really hot time of day to do this walk - which here is late morning, and after Lauren admittedly had underestimated the distance, an hour we eventually arrived. The beach was full of locals in their Sunday best clothes swimming in the sea. This is normal in Asia as nobody wants their skin to tan. Lauren and I found a nice spot and relaxed. In the afternoon we found ourselves to be surrounded by teenagers in red tops, monks with boom boxes and selfie sticks. It seems there was some sort of promotional volunteer work type
Thing going on as the youth were all collecting rubbish on the beach and they had balloons and music. We watched for a bit and then decided to get a tuk tuk back. We later found out the push bikes had been free at the hostel and that it was 4km that we'd walked in the heat.
That evening Lauren fancied crab for dinner so after walking to find a tuk tuk, failing and going into a hotel to ask them to call us one, we made it to a restaurant called Kimly. It was very popular and the menu looked good, they even had shark and sting ray to choose from. I went safe and my usual anti-seafood way by ordering a coconut chicken curry and Loz had her crab. We had some spring rolls and noodles and I struggled to help finish it, but the food really was amazing. We got a tuk tuk back a played a couple of games of pool in the bar before bed.
