Monday & Tuesday
In the morning we checked out and went back near the beach for some breakfast before our expected 10am pickup. The bus was 40 minutes late and it took about 3.5 hours rather than the 2.5 it was supposed to. The driver was very relaxed and was stopping off to pick up and drop off things for his mates as well as getting a drink and his lunch and whatever else he kept randomly stopping for. We had comfortable seats on the mini bus though so it wasn't too bad and at this point in the trip we know to expect lateness and a longer trip than what is advertised as is usually the way!
Arriving in Sihanouk ville which is where serendipity beach is, we checked into our surprisingly nice hostel, 'one stop hostel'. The female dorm was clean and had air con, something we'd been without for the last 4 nights, and the all female shared wash areas supplied shampoo and body was and had hairdryers, were cleaned often and just generally very nice. The swimming pool wasn't entirely shaded like it has been at some places we've visited and there was a lounge area you could watch films in. We immediately went out for a walk, my friend from uni Helen had lived here for 8 months so recommended to go see her friend Adam and suggested a couple of restaurants and bars. We found Adams 'Bar from home' but it was closed in the day and just had a little wander around. Returning to the hostel we chatted to a girl in our room, Faye from Devon, and invited her out for dinner with us.
We all walked down to the beach and found a place called Muslies, sat on the beach and ordered a beer while watching the sunset and fireworks going off. We all had bbq food for dinner, and although it took a while until it was ready it was so tasty! Faye trains kids in gymnastics having done it herself for years, so it was nice for us all to have a similar sport in common which we chatted about for ages, finally having some different conversation to what usually comes up when you're travelling.
After a few drinks, we went on to find Adams bar and found him chilling in there (but open!) quite hungover from the night before. We all sat and chatted for ages and apart from one other guy who came by, we had the bar to ourselves. Adam pulled out aload of different games for us to play and we had a good laugh as well as being able to choose our own music which typically was your Saturday night in with the girls kind of music (spice girls, Whitney Houston etc). Adam also had this large bamboo stick with cut out holes to put shot glasses in where four people at a time would drink and then the score would go on a blackboard which was up on the wall. We contributed to England being in the lead and had shots of rum with some sort sachets of something can't remember the name of that has a similar effect to red bull.
Leaving Adams bar very drunk, we went down to the beach and took part in doing the limbo under a pole somehow set on fire. Cautious Kirsty wasn't concerned at this point and gave it a go with the girls. Unfortunately not long after, I lost a ring which Nick had got me when we'd been to Ludlow market. It wasn't expensive but I absolutely loved it and knew it had been one I'd picked out of a basket of vintage-type Jewllery that had been one of its kind there... so I was really upset. After losing Lauren to others, Faye and I failed to get a kfc as it was closed and I was on the phone to Nick for a while before going downing lots of water to prevent a bad hangover episode again, and climbing like a ninja into my top bunk.
In the morning I felt a lot better than I had previous times I'd been out. I went and ordered myself a pancake while the girls were still in bed and then got ready to go for a swim. We chilled for a bit, I managed to use a computer to upload some photos as we never normally have computers at places, and then we all took a trip to kfc for lunch. I'd kept in touch with Adam and said thanks for showing us a good night and he'd said he might meet back up with us on the beach at some point this week. We said goodbye to Faye and got the tuk tuk driver to take us down to the beach so I could ask in the bar we were at and have a quick look on the sand if I could potentially see my ring. Sadly it never showed up, but some guy said there was someone else who had lost a Rolex and how he'd lost his phone two weeks before. He basically said once something hits
The sand that's it you're screwed, so I went on my way and accepted it to have been lost to the beach.
A 10 minute tuk tuk trip later, we arrived on otres 1 beach and booked into a place Adam had recommended called Papa Pippos. It was beautiful here, really peaceful and felt like a romantic couples type destination. We checked into our beach hut for 1 night only as they didn't have availability for more, had a wander up the beach before getting ready and having dinner. It was proper home made Italian fresh food, I had calzone and absolutely loved it. It was the kind of place that even when you were stuffed you wanted to continue eating just because it smelt so amazing in there. We attempted to take part in the trivia quiz, Lauren was upset that her knowledge was vague on this one, although I don't think there was many questions anyone under the age of 40 would have gotten right. We got to bed at a decent time.
